The whole thing was still scripted, though. Does it still count as breaking kayfabe if you don’t actually depart from the script/booking?

I get that, too. It is still weird to me, though.
Oh for sure. I still predict that the meta-fabe will blend with the old school personas enough that we may actually see the return of the 80’s superstar motif reinvented. If we’re not seeing that transition already.
It’s kinda like how superhero movies got gritty and real, but now we’ve moved back into the ridiculous like talking raccoons and mad science.
