Has anyone made use of custom conditions for NPCs/villains? That is, instead of a specific set of words (Angry, Afraid, etc.) a number (e.g. 3 conditions) and letting them have free-form names? Has this worked well, worked poorly?

As long as they’re still feelings, I can see that working well.
I like that idea. I feel that villain conditions are the least intuitive part of the game.
Sure. Things like Shown Up, Scattered, or Understood can change a villain’s/group’s behavior.
EX: Spirit Nation
[ – ] Understood (Mikasi only): Reveal pacts made and beg for help.
[ – ] Scattered: Retreat to multiple positions.
The Blacktop Bully
[ – ] Shown Up: Go off road and attack from an unexpected direction.
