I haven’t played the game yet, but I love just about everything about it. Please feel free to subscribe to my blog, too. Can’t wait to play UW at some point.

  1. Solid review. I ran a story arc of UW a while back and we had a blast. The abstract combat worked for me. “I shoot her in the face.” Is short and messy, just they way it should be. If you want something longer, it might not actually be combat as much as sport (boxing or fencing come to mind.)

  2. I hope my comment about the combat system in no way seemed like a criticism. I like a bit more crunch, but I’m definitely intrigued by the game’s narrative approach. I hope to give it a try at some point soon.

  3. Hey, thanks for the review! And glad you like the book. (Signed up to the blog, hope you get a chance to take UW for a whirl one day)

As for the combat, that must be on my top 3 things that people mention. After the current book (dystopian Faction-heavy campaign setting) the next one will be looking at more combat-centric campaigns, and thus will have optional deeper combat rules. (Fair warning, I have only the vaguest idea of what those rules will be, but it’s in the works). That won’t be before next spring, however.

  4. Hey, Sean. The game is fantastic. I definitely want to give it a whirl, as written, soon. I’m not necessarily interested in a more combat-centric campaign, but a more robust set of rules may be more appealing to my players. I, on the other hand, am very openminded, so I’m eager to take the game for a spin.

  5. Normally something like that would give me pause, but it doesn’t for pen and paper RPGs. If you can grok the systems, you have a fair Idea how they would play out and with the added bonus that you don’t have exceptionally good or bad players to skew the analysis. And yes, I have been on both ends of that stick with terrible games and great players and viseversa.

  6. Pawel Solowczuk Fair enough. I was reviewing it based on what I read. I’ve played enough AW world games to have a sense of how they run. The things that I highlighted are readily apparent, such as character generation. I made several characters, and explained the process. I also think I indicated that I haven’t run the system.

The faction system worked wonderfully as well.

Finally, there any MANY folks who review games that they haven’t played.

The only aspect of the game that I might tweak is combat. It may work fine- especially when the PCs are exchanging laser blasts with a pack of goons.

Bigger bosses might require more complex combat. I also don’t have enough time to play all the games that I’ve purchased, but I like to spread the word about games that are promising.

Yes, I suppose my review was more of an intro. UW is one of my favorite AW games, based on what I read. I was happy to spread the good word. Whether my message is a review or intro is more an issue of semantics.

  7. Honestly I took it as a “First Impressions” style review, which is fine and still useful.

Also, for bigger “bosses”, check out the expanded rules in Far Beyond Humanity! It has rules for handling traditional villain fights, and overwhelming foes (warning, it is likely that someone will get mutilated or just plain die if you use the overwhelming foe rules. They are for when you characters take on something they absolutely shouldn’t)
