Hi everyone, long time player of Dungeon World and looking to start a new campaign in Masks with my friends.

Hi everyone, long time player of Dungeon World and looking to start a new campaign in Masks with my friends. I have one friend who really wants to play the Soldier above all else but it seems to only be released to backers currently. I am not very familiar with how kickstarter works or if it is even possible to become a backer at this stage, but is there anyway for me to get access to the last couple playbooks before my campaign begins? I would buy or preorder the supplement it comes with but there does not seem to be an option or release date yet. Any news?

  1. Ask your player to front you the playbook? They’re creative commons and require playtesting, and you can’t exactly run a game for a playbook you don’t know anything about. Just don’t go posting them publicly probably, and pass any thoughts along to Magpie.

  2. The player does not have the playbook either, he just knows the description and it matches the character he wants to play. I was hoping there was a way to gain access still.

  3. Ah. Unfortunately not, then; the Secrets of AEGIS playbooks are early-alpha and Kickstarter-exclusive right now, and as near as I can tell the Backerkit is locked down. You can try emailing Magpie and see if they’ll work with you, they’re pretty cool people.

  4. Really wish there was a way to become a backer or preorder the supplement so I can join in on the in progress stuff. Shame cause I did not learn about Masks until too late.

  5. Most of the play test playbooks don’t change that much before release, but occasionally there will be significant tweaks. For example when The Doomed was first in play test it didn’t have the Nemesis portion, that was added during play testing. So if you do get access to the one you are looking for keep in mind there could be changes.

  6. As someone who wrote one of the LE playbooks (the Newborn, written with the great T. Franzke) I’d say that there’s many small adjustments that really change the flow of the playbook, and especially for some of the limited edition ones it’s been really evident 🙂

  7. Alberto Muti right, sorry I didn’t mean to say that the changes don’t effect the flow on a character using the playbook. I just was trying to say that the obviously drastic changes are only sometimes. Of course my view may also be skewed by updating a Doomed that I was playing so that I had a Nemesis vs. only seeing the changes on paper.

  8. Hey, no need to apologise! It’s true that sometimes changes are only minor, but I’ve definitely seen some make more radical changes, and i know from experience that at this stage there can be things that look fine on paper, but sometimes are a bit difficult in game. I’m not saying that they’re not fit to be played, but i think it’s fair to flag it as something that prospective new players may want to think about 🙂

  9. I will have to see if there is any way to gain access to The Soldier before I can decide to use it or not. I had mentioned to him to take a look at The Legacy or The Protege to try to simulate the authority over him and red tape he was looking for.
