Just ran my first game of MotW game Friday and it was a blast. Had 10 hunters facing off against a goatman that can impersonate people. However, I had one concern about the ruled that actually came up in play. That is, every hunter even the Mundane can use magic. In my case, the Crooked with a -1 weird tried to use magic to heal a unstable Monstrous. He failed his roll, but me and some other players were pretty confused that he could even try to. Is every hunter supposed to familiar enough with the underworld that they have can perform basic magic? Is this something you allow in your games? Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Yes, every hunter can do magic. Ask the player where their character learned to do it and how the magic manifests.
OMG 10 hunters? that’s madness!
Re: magic… Horst Wurst has it exactly right.
New optional magic rules are going to be in the “More Weirdness” expansion. Michael has a early version posted on his site: https://genericgames.co.nz/files/MotW_more_weirdness.pdf
Whoa. TEN Hunters sounds like a lot to me. Glad to hear things went well.
Chris Stone-Bush I think 5-8 is usually considered the max…
Yeesh. Different strokes for different folks, but I don’t really like running any game, PbtA or otherwise, with more than 4 players.
Chris Stone-Bush Personally I always felt 2-4 ideal.
Mark Tygart Chris Stone-Bush Yeah, 2-5 for me.
I’ve run convention games with 6 and 7, but I’ve found that’s too many for me. I can’t keep track of all the characters and what’s happening.
Michael Sands More power to those brave Keepers that can!
also keep in mind, players with a low wired score are apt to fail at use magic, and a failed magic roll can be oodels of fun.
Not speaking from experience, but I agree I would ask the player how he knows how to do that, and if he wouldn’t, don’t forget the “The Keeper May Say That.. . ” rule – I would say for the mundane Crooked that doing a healing spell on the spot would at least require consulting a tome (which could be the internet if someone has a phone) and maybe take some time. I would probably make it easier for a spooky or spellslinger, letting the fiction guide that. Seasoned hunters like the characters know that magic is real, but may not be able to do it easily. I have never seen Sam or Dean just lay on hands to heal someone, but I have seen Castielle do it, or example (or is that a move?).
