Hi – new keeper here!

Hi – new keeper here!

Hi – new keeper here! Can someone please clarify for me the deal with monster weaknesses? What happens if hunters do enough harm to the monster to reach it’s harm capacity without using the weakness?

I’m creating a fungus monster that exists primarily underground, like most actual fungi. The weakness is that entire fungus needs to be completely destroyed (e.g. by fire, electric shock etc.). But I’m worried that the hunters will just try to hack away at mushrooms until they reach it’s harm capacity. What are the mechanics/strategies for dealing with this?

  1. Depends on the creature and the fiction around it. At its most basic, you can just make it run away. If there’s tech involved, you could say a force field appears that absorbs further harm until the weakness is triggered. In your case, just never let them get all the mushrooms. Until they use the weakness, there’s just always more underground that regenerates. The fundamental rule is that the monster simply doesn’t die until the weakness is exploited. How you make that apparent to the players is up to you.

Weaknesses don’t have to just be certain damage types, either. It could be an event or other action they need to perform first. Only limit is your imagination 🙂

  2. Aaron Dalton Thanks for the clarification! That makes sense and I’m sure they’ll get the idea when more and more mushrooms keep cropping up 🙂 And Jeremy Scott – yes! I was thinking of making poisonous spores that infect woodland creatures to act as minions lol
