  1. What central conflict do you want the character to have?

If they are a wide-eyed spunky kid whom others think is in over their head, pick the Beacon and choose the move C’Mon Lucky.

If they are tied to specific mentor (a Professor Oak type?) pick the Protege and reinterpret one of the abilities (elemental control?) as controlling creatures of some sort.

If they are balancing civilian and hero life, pick the Janus and choose the rodent/insect control ability.

    Etc.

You can probably create a plausible trainer-type character in every playbook. So look through them all and decide which playbook represents the central conflict or tension you’d be interested in having your character explore.

  2. Alexi Sargeant thanks! That’s honestly what I’ve been doing with another powerset I want to play with.

I was leaning toward a reformed or delinquent who was the child of a mad genetic scientist, but that Beacon you mentioned sounds so dang delightful and just like Pokemon Trainer in Smash Bros just trying to stay the heck out of the way while their Pokemon duke it out with anime swordbois and giant monsters. I love it.

I’m curious what other takes on the ability-set people come up with though. Until I actually get to play Masks (currently a forever GM), I’m always looking out for potential NOCs to stock a school with.

  3. If your monsters aren’t always cooperative, I could see the Nova working well, with “charging up your powers” being calling up your monsters, flares being things you command them to do, and losing control of your powers being a monster disobeying. Depending on where the monsters come from, you could frame it as either sorcery, biokinesis or elemental control (as in, control over elemental beings).

  4. Maybe a Legacy, where each of the powers in the suite is granted by a different creature? e.g. Summon a bird that gives you flight, a big heavyweight monster does all the Super-Strength stuff, a shield-creating critter sits on your shoulder and gives you Invincibility…

And you haven’t quite yet made friends with the laser eyed monster or the the beast with super-senses, but you’ll figure it out eventually, right?

  5. People have been coming up with some great ideas, but I for one want to be the wet blanket and go dark. Be the Doomed. Have a different monster be each of your powers and have your Nemesis be your Rival. However, instead of having fun pokemon battles, you guys are eventually going to run into each other and have a battle that might destroy Earth itself, or maybe just the city, the town, or the whole country. You don’t really know. All you know is that your pokemon are getting stronger all the time and that strong trainers demand strong rivals. ^_^
