Anyone heard of (or have suggestions for) a Dwarf Fortress hack?
So quick ideas off the top of my head: Lots of “mini-playbooks” and drop XP to 3 or 4. Taking a new playbooks should be easier than normal, but not too simple.

Sounds like you want lots of compendium classes.
Most of my DF games end up with “use Burning Wheel” because it seems to do the slow build-up stuff better. If it is focussing on the implosion AW would go well I think. Or dealing with aftermath (Thrain and the dwarves of Erebor, post-Smaug?)?

Engineering: Like Ritual. “I want to build a lava moat around the castle!” “I want to build some elephant traps.” “I want to build a giant statue in my honor whose top will pierce the heavens.” “Okay, cool, but for that you’ll need lots of dwarf labor, a shitload of stone and metal, and you’ll be risking…”
