Thanks to a prompt from Christopher Stone-Bush, I just revisited my James Bond AW hack, Agent World. It hasn’t seen enough playtesting to be considered a finished product yet, but it’s fully playable and I’m very happy with the way it captures the genre.

If you get a chance to check it out, please let me know how it worked for you. Enjoy!

  1. Lately I’ve been thinking about agent world, but couldn’t remember who was working on it, or where to find it. I’m glad I’ve catched this update.

    Thank you!

  2. Love it!

    Questions after a quick scan.

    -Can I die?

    – Is Just Where I Want You not a bit restrictive? I mean, would it not be better to have a broader move like DW’s Defy Danger that would also cover this?

Lastly I would like to mention that AW’s Read a Sitch and Read a Person are perfect matches for the genre.

    Good Job!

  3. Thanks Wynand Louw, I’m glad you like it!

    – Death is not intended to be the major source of tension in this genre. Failing the mission is what a super-spy truly fears! That being said, death could certainly be a Consequence if the fiction demanded it.

    – In any other genre, Just where I want you… would be far too restrictive. In a James Bond emulator, it should come up in every single session! It plays nicely with the Capture Them GM Move and gives the players incentive to follow the genre convention.

    – The original draft had a Defy Danger equivalent, but I found it wasn’t specific enough for this genre. Either it was applied too broadly, which detracted from the hyper-competence celebration, or it encouraged debate about whether it should be triggered or not. GM Custom Moves turn out to be nearly the same thing, but allow for a lot more finesse in their application.

    – I also toyed with Read a Sitch or Person, but after watching every Bond movie I just couldn’t see how it applied. The genre convention is for the hero to always find the information they need, when they need it. I considered having a Read a Sitch move dovetail with the Piece together the villain’s evil plan agent responsibility, but I felt like that would have added an unnecessary level of complexity. This would be another place for Custom Moves to step in on occasion, but I feel strongly that it doesn’t fit in the core.

    Thanks again for the feedback!
