Hi everyone, I’m still working on my #NahualRPG and I’ve been thinking in using the stats names in Spanish. The thing is one of them means something in English (Temple), do you think it will be confusing?

These are the stats:

-Furia (Fury)

-Temple (Grit)

-Mañan (Wit)

-Pasión (Passion)

  1. As an American who only really fluent in the English, I’m with Mark. Más español. Just maybe do the parenthesis like you do up there when doing the main description/stat reference, as a little crutch for gringos like me.

  2. Im not sure what it is about but I think that if it’s important or adds flavour you want you should do that and just add text that clarifies when you talk about the stats. Anyway I could learn more about your project?

  3. I feel the need to defend my original comment after Johnstone Metzger​’s response.

    The question in the post was not “are four words in Spanish bad?” but “is using the word Temple to mean Grit confusing?”

  4. Aaron Griffin I am sorry! I did not mean to insult you! Personally, I am in the same situation as you: I would find it a bit confusing too, at first. But I think it is worth doing the work to get used to a few Spanish words for the sake of this game, and I was trying to be dismissive of people who would not do that work. I was not trying to dismiss those who would find the use of the word Temple confusing.

  5. azlath do you plan on italicizing Spanish phrases in the English release?

    I don’t think it be confusing at all to see “roll +temple” but it would confuse me a little to see “roll +temple”. (The first couple times.)

    Then again, if every 3rd phrase is in italics, that loses its value.

  6. Jeremy Strandberg you are right, I guess the italics can help, and (as Fraser Simons suggest) I’ll be of course adding a 2+ line descriptor in English on the stats section.

    I’m also using some moves on Spanish as well as certain terms, only when a translation is not quite possible or the Spanish sounds cool IMO =P

  7. … Or you could choose to change the word. Maybe: Fibra, Valor (they probably are pretty recognizable even for English speakers, I think), or Agallas (this sounds more exotic, in my Italian ears).

  8. Andrea Parducci  I’ve consider other possibilities before, this is not the first iteration. So far Temple is the closest. Valor and Agallas are more towards being brave to do things, and Temple is more for keeping your cool on hard situations.

    Sill, I’ll give it another thought, and will look at other possibilities. Thanks for the suggestions =)

  10. azlath I feel your pain. I made a game with a stat in Portuguese that looked like the English word “axe” – it did cause confusion, so I thought okay, what’s an alternative spelling? The most common alternative: “ache”. Great.

    In the end I found a 3rd option. FWIW I think Temple is fine. People will say it wrong while playing (I just did, in my head, again) but that’s OK.

  11. Hi, a spaniard here.

    Another substitute for Temple could be Frío. It is the oficial word used for the stat cool in the spanish translation of AW. I like more Temple in the context of this game, though.

    By the way, “Maña” is more about tricks, practical knowledge and manual dexterity than intelligence or deep knowledge.

    I guess for a non-spanish speaker any spanish word would sound cool for this game. From a native point of view, they still sound really cool, I like your choices.
