Had my first session about a week ago; just finished writing up the fronts. I had three players (Hardholder, Savvyhead & Gunlugger) and it went pretty well. The other two players couldn’t make it, but they’ll be there on Wednesday and I’ll see if I can blend 1st session style with standard play to ease them in. Anyway, I know what playbooks they’re taking, so I have a loveletter for them

  1. For the Operator:

    Dear Sweeney,

So, as a one-off you got a lift from Putrid and Amy upriver to Lobsterville to do a job for Barnum there. He wanted to run a guy called ‘Lark’ off the island, but didn’t want his friends to give him any heat over it. Please roll+Cool:

On a 10+, nice one, you made 1-barter out of it and got clean away with a thumbs-up from Barnum. Lark may not be your biggest fan, but who cares! Mark 1 experience too.

    On a 7-9, pick one

    ·         You got rid of Lark, but a few of his friends caught you on the quays as you were leaving; they fucked you up and stole the jingle out of your pocket, but you gave as good as you got and they’re none the wiser about Barnum’s involvement. Mark 1 experience and set your harm countdown to 6 o’clock

    ·         You ran him out, but you think his friends cottoned on about Barnum’s role in the move. Mark 1 experience. Barnum’s unlikely to be happy…

On a miss, pretty much both of these happen

    Love & Kisses, your MC.

  2. For the Skinner:

    Hey gorgeous,

So, you got a very nice invitation from Vega who’s in charge of Stolo downriver. He wants to impress some people from out of town and you’re just the ticket. Be a dear and roll+Hot:

On a 10+, they love you! Vega gets a nice deal with Dolarhyde’s outfit and you reap some nice rewards. Get 2-barter and mark 1 experience. Hold 1 (as per Hypnotic or Artful & Gracious) against Vega and Dolarhyde

On a 7-9, it goes pretty well. You don’t quite pull off a perfect evening, choose one

    ·         The deal goes through, but one of Vega’s lieutenants gets the wrong idea – he’s a jealous bastard and that’s going to come back to bite you at some stage. Get 1-barter and mark 1 experience

    ·         Your presence seems to have distracted Vega and not Dolarhyde. Vega’s not really annoyed with you, but is taking it out on you, the deal was made but didn’t favour Stolo. Vega holds 1 (as per Hypnotic) against you and you 1 against Dolarhyde. Get 1-barter and mark 1 experience

    ·         Vega’s very happy, but Dolarhyde blames you for a deal where Stolo hold all the cards. Dolarhyde holds 1 (as per Hypnotic) against you and you 1 against Vega. Get 1-barter and mark 1 experience

On a miss, you have an off-night. Get the first one and choose one of the other two.

    Love & Kisses, your MC

Any thoughts/suggested tweaks? Really I’d like to know from experience players/MCs if I’m getting the balance right at all here?

    Thanks

    Donogh

  3. Hmm, that is the way I’ve written it, isn’t it! I guess I had just thought about the multiple effects of the stories in the outcomes and not the aggregated goodies – of course you could explain it as way of harsh lessons, but the clean success should be better.

  4. I see no problem with getting more xp when things go bad.  The characters learned more.  I’d say the problem I saw was the skinner’s bad stuff felt a bit lack luster.  I think there are some great opportunities to create some new bad stuff on a failure here.  Maybe on a miss have the skinner pick one of a few complications that could have happened with the scene.  Some classics are ‘___ is entranced and must have you at any cost.’ ‘You made a jest during your performance that offended ___.’  or ‘Something happened during the performance that will be talked about for a long time.  Detail what happened.  Nobody will forget it for a long time.’

  5. Thanks David – yoink!

I was finding it difficult to put detail in the Skinner piece. I got a nice vision of the type of character the Operator was going to be, but nothing (not even a name) from the Skinner’s player…
