This is a very preliminary draft of the core moves for what I’m calling “Antiviolence World.” It’s meant to be * World not for settings with no violence, but where the heroes don’t use violence except as a true last resort. I still want to let them do exciting things, have chases and investigations and pull off cons and interrogations. Probably need to add a generic interrogation move, or else fold that into the investigation one. Probably need to add some kind of act under fire/defy danger one too.
Stat names are completely tentative, as is the description of damage levels, ’cause I still don’t know what I’m doing with that. And playbooks are not fully even dreamed up yet. Probably that will take deciding more specifically what kind of setting I want to try first.
But comments are welcome. I just couldn’t seem to let this go and needed to try to find out if it’s headed anywhere useful.
Sounds like maybe a police game…?
Could be just about anything at this point…
As requested, my… meandering and musing;
Looks like Brave, Clever, Compassion is basically Hard, Sharp, Hot… that works for me!
Cool might be Temperance and Weird might be Karma, and this would keep with what strikes me as a loosely themed aesthetic of Virtues as Attributes.
My idea of basic actions that are basically basic to anyone;
• Under Pressure/Fire/Unusual Circumstances/Karmic imbalance/Extreme Duress — do something daring
• Go Aggro/React Dominantly — intimidate with extreme prejudice
• Seize by force, Take ’em down, Oppose ownership aggressively, Pull out all the stops — insist on consent
• Help/Interfere/Trap someone — initiate a strategic maneuver
• Seduce/Parley/Annoy/Manipulate — act tactical with tacit action
• Read Person/Info/Sitch/Streets — wonder with wits
Oh yeah, and there is the option to…
Imply No Scientific Account Necessarily Employed
…which accounts for going mental with such conviction reality bows to your whim… but that’s just… er… well, Weird…
Most of these look like they have been covered. The only one I find missing might be a Takedown/Aggressive Procurement move… if phrased within the police game skin suggested by Marshall Miller.
Even if your game is all about Nuns & Orphans… someone is going to ask to break a ruler, and someone is going to refuse to have a “measure of justice” from any guardians “handed” to them.
Violence is in the nature of nature itself, good and bad forms of violence is not a concept that matters to the underlying options a character has. Karma based effects might need to be loosely defined, much like with Weird.
A name like Virtue World… Orphan World… or even better The World Parishes… with some Pacific Parish, remote Nunnery, or under financed Orphanage as the prime locations for the stage… and some inspiration from things like; Oliver Twist, The King and I, The Prince and The Pauper, Sister Acts, Little Orphan Annie, Lilies of the Field, Newsies, The Nun’s Story, Pippy Longstocking, Sound of Music… Bridget The Flying Nun.
A police game might be Vice World, as a play on Miami Vice… that might have some mileage.
I’m seeing cops here too. Interesting!
You could have an outcome for resorting to violence that is something like if you choose to deal damage “you are suspended pending an inquiry” or something.
Breaking the Law as Darkest Self. Maybe a thing about your family as something to protect and also as a source of conflict.
Cops & Nuns… both ideas could be used in either (or a combined) theme!
