I’d kick myself if I didn’t try to work out one of my favorite hero types, Batgirl. The Remade playbook is about a once strong hero hit hard at a young age. The recovery took its sweet time and the kid must relearn how to be a superhero. The themes are a sudden weakness from atrophy and survivor’s guilt from being the one in a million that gets a second chance at being a superhero. The Remade is a strong hero that doesn’t realize it, possibly hit harder by conditions that anyone else. Trust is hard to come by early on as this hero is more introverted than others, while some can view the Remade as a jinx to their team. Can this hero once again become the super they were meant to be?
Freak 1 Danger -1 Savior 0 Superior -1 Mundane 2
It could use some work, but what do you all think of the idea?
I’d expand on the ‘failed hero making good, bad luck charm’ theme.
Maybe call it “The Albatross” or “The 2nd Chance”.
Examples:
Mega Girl (strong female protagonist)
Mr. Incredible (the incredibles)
or maybe this could be like AW’s playbook supplements, or DW’s compendium classes, maybe this can be made as an add-on for a character playing any of the existing playbooks?
Toure right, it would work well as a universal custom move. It would probably promote taking on a new “main” stat. For example, a bull might have Fight Smarter not Harder using superior for engages while an outsider could have Exiled from Homeworks and use freak for change character or things like that. Using it as a custom move would really make a strange character and present the interesting struggle between being who you were and who you are now. The moment of truth lock would be very interesting.
This is maybe controversial but I am really not a fan.
The cool thing about Batgirl is not that she overcame her injuries (to me at least) in that regard she was way morei nteresting and powerful as a character when she was Oracle.
Having a whole character that is JUST all about about how they have been damaged once and getting constant reminders of that doesn’t seem fun or appropriate for the tone Masks seem to be going for. I’d rather see this done with a character like is shown here : https://plus.google.com/102492542062516780244/posts/KCRnfSx5uNF
that is more then just their past. If Batgirl is all about her PTSD and trying to get better again then she is way more defined by the Joker then by her. If she is a Janus or a Beacon then her character is about way more then her former injuries and therefore also more rounded.
Just my 2 cents.
The transformed character is all about her injuries of a sort, and worse an ever present and visible affliction reminds them and everyone what it was. It’s not going to be a sad, depressing story just because one person knows defeat. If anything, that would make it all the more happy when they overcome their pain.
Also while you say you want a happy feel good game, I truly do not. As the Hope High playthrough attested too, I want some drama. The coming together of a team is a cool and joyous thing, but the keeping together of a team is a whole different matter all together.
