Give me cool examples of people shutting others down
I created a character with a focus on that move but my general good nature makes it hard for me to role play to that move.

This quote from Winston Churchill.
Some woman: you sir are drunk
Churchill: I may be drunk, Miss, but in the morning I’ll be sober and you’ll still be ugly.
The sorts of things that come to mind really depend on the character. What sort of ‘shutdowner’ are you? Do you see your character tearing down others efforts with biting wit, being above the fray and unaffected, the valley girl “talk to the hand” sort?
Ignoring people, calling them out based on their reputations, vicious sarcasm, shoving/elbow checking, knocking their books out of their hands, writing “WHORE” on their locker, suggesting they’re fucking a teacher or an unpopular kid, spreading rumors, pantsing them, dunking milk on them, giving them a wedgie, pretending you like them only to dump them in front of everyone, dousing them in blood…
Threats are shut-downs too. “If you touch her again I’ll hold you down while she kicks the teeth out of your face.” Or, like, a werewolf in monster-form snarling and roaring over someone.
Tim Franzke, I have faith in you. Unleash your inner bastard!
You can also be a nice shut down person.
-Just a firm smile and a stare.
-Politely saying “if you can’t say something nice…”
-Bowing your head slightly and mutrering something about karma.
-Spewing facts about the issue until they give up and walk away.
It doesn’t have to be mean to shut them down. It just has to be something that could stop their course of action. If you roll successfully, not even the MC can say “Oh, that’s not enough to shut them down.” Just like with Turn Someone On, if you succeed, it happens, regardless of how you do it.
“Yeah, whatever”
(While wandering away) “Keep talking…I’m listening…”
One of my favorites in real life: “Ugh, most boring story ever.”
Just have your character checking their MySpace while somebody is talking to them. Not Facebook, myspace. Make sure that the character is aware that their words are less important than a social media account that has not been checked in over 10 years.
(Looking at nails) “Hope I’m not getting a hangnail.”
Adam West
But it does have to be something that could stop their action. To do it, you have to do it.
My point is that sometimes the well placed snotty or sarcastic comment is enough to stop someone in their tracks. And if you roll successfully to shut them down, it doesn’t matter what you say, it shuts them down. That’s why the move isn’t specifically about physically shutting someone up.
Lisa Padol nothing about SSD is about stoping what they are doing though.
They might stop, but that’s really just a bonus more than hard-written rules.
