Hello everyone!
I’m new to The Sprawl, I have my first session tomorrow, and I can’t wait to get started!
I was wondering if anyone could give me some guidance on running combat in the game?
Thank you!

First, don’t think of combat as anything separate from doing anything else. When a character strikes out at someone you use the related moves. There are no combat rounds so all you have to do it make sure each player gets some screen time. Some may be fighting and some may be doing all kinds of other things.
Oh okay, so should I call for Mix it Up rolls when someone’s say, shooting at an enemy, and maybe Act Under Pressure to take cover from gunfire?
Exactly! And if the combat isn’t dramatically important, it may well be resolved in one roll.
Awesome! Thank you so much for the help 🙂
Combat is one of those things that I have seen people treat like a more traditional game. Here you need to find out the intent the players have. They could use their guns to seize something or take someone out which could be Mix It Up. But, if they are trying to intimidate someone then they would use the same guns to Play Hardball. They could also use the same guns to Act Under Pressure just to get away. It may look like the similar things but they are angling for different ends in each case.
Basically, your two favorite questions will be, “What do you do?” and “What do you want by doing that?”
Ah okay, that’s really helpful, thank you 😀
Yes. Just look at the fiction, and call out any moves the fiction triggers, just like you’d do in any other situation. Striking against a target could even be help/interfere, if the fiction so says. It could even be part of a negotiation (Get the Job – but this is already out of a proper combat situation, usually)
Thank you 🙂
Nicola Urbinati Took me a long time to get into this mind set, but when I did, I enjoyed PBTA games much more.
