Because Todd Zircher asked, and because it’s easy and fun..
Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II
(Class 3 Speeder, Armored, Armed x3, Rugged)
GAU-8 Avenger autocannon (Class 2. 2H, Clumsy, Destructive, Penetrating, Spray)
(Class 2 still doesn’t seem right for this, but I could be looking for too much specificity…)
AGM-65 Maverick (Class 3, 2H, Clumsy, Destructive, Breaching, Penetrating, Seeking)
Generic Guided Bomb (Class 4, 2H, Clumsy, Destructive, Breaching, Concussive, Detonation, Seeking) (Can represent Paveways, JDAMs, any standard bomb with a guidance package)
Generic Cluster Bomb (Class 3, 2H, Clumsy, Destructive, Detonation, Shrapnel)
Of the 3 Armed slots, the GAU-8 always takes up one, and the others can be a mix of the other choices. No, you can’t take another GAU-8…
The A-10 also normally carries a sensor/marker pod on one pylon, and a pair of AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles on another for self-defense. Add in one more Armed slot, and put in this:
AIM-9 Sidewinder (Class 2, 2H, Clumsy, Destructive, Seeking, Shrapnel)
Seems a common problem is the need to use Armed multiple times for vehicles.
Yeah, I don’t count it more than once – but one heavy weapon for the pilot and one for the turret doesn’t reflect some of the mid-sized to larger, or more capable, military vehicles. But, those don’t necessarily fit within the basic Vehicle classes.
It would appear I need to address Class 4+ Assets in general!
That said, stuff like the Avenger Autocannon could easily be a Class 0 Heavy Weapon without problem. Tags are usually meant to be defining behavioral attributes rather than expressions of raw power.
Unformed thought – “Armament(X)” tag, where a vehicle can have a total of X class of weapons attached. Maybe Armament maxes as 2x the class of the vehicle?
Sean Gomes I’m thinking that it’s not the Class, but the entire category – Heavy Weapon seems to do well for defining man-portable, or close to that, weapons, but tank cannon and the Avenger rotary are a whole class above. Kinda almost ship-level stuff.
ETA: thinking about the fusion cannon on the Trepida, it’s noted that while it’s range is short, it can seriously damage any ship it gets close to. In any iteration of Traveller, it will destroy a light ship like a Scout, or Far Trader, with one good (or even not so good) hit.
Noah Doyle I’m with you. A Heavy Weapon could be a jeep mounted machine gun, something that could be pulled off and carried, but something like a tank cannon not so much. However, a tank cannon could well threaten a starship.
