Carta Galaxia Development Update #23

Happy (slightly belated) Canada Day everyone! And Happy pre-emptive 4th of July to our southern friends.

It feels good to be back in the saddle, actually getting writing done. I’m trying to pace myself, keep a good work/writing/family balance going (I hear tell of a mythical thing called sleep, I’ll have to give it a try).

I’m happy to report that I have finished the first draft of Chapter 2 – Jump Points, and I’d be very interested to hear feedback. I’ve attached it to this post, so please check it out!

It’s separated into 3 parts:

– How to create a compelling Jump Point

– Running a Jump Point

– 6 Example Jump Points

For the examples, I tried to give a wide enough diversity in the examples, scenarios that will cater to different character archetypes and playgroups. Most of these are Jump Points that I’ve run for a variety of play groups, so they’re at least somewhat tested (Checkpoint ended up being super deadly the two times I ran it and needed to be toned waaaay down).

I’m quite pleased at how the overall formatting of the Jump Points came out. I tried to keep them brief (1 page) without making them too obtuse or inscrutable. Tell me if you think they need to be 2-pagers with more guidance instead (like the original “Planet-Bound Salvage” example Jump Point from the UW core book).

  1. I like this very much and am looking forward to the campaign creation material since that’s the part that always gets me with SF games.

  2. This looks really cool! I’ve had some issues with adventure building in UW – but treating it like a TV-show with a smash cut opening rather than a “traditional RPG” would help a lot!

  3. This is awesome! I’m itching to get some of those Jump Points to my table now.

I love the structure of Jump Points, they give me exactly what I need without extra reading or information that won’t come into play. This breakdown of how to construct them is great. Your examples are really useful.

Your tips on running the Jump Points are super cool. I wish that more products had this kind of focus on making things gameable. There is plenty of awesome on those one-pagers, I don’t think there is a need for 2-pagers.

  4. Being new to the PbtA world and having just started reading the UW core book, this is incredibly useful! The examples will help sell your entire PbtA interpretation to newcomers! I’ve only ever played heavily procedural rpgs like D&D/D20 StarWars. This will help me GM sessions immensely! Can’t WAIT to see it finished. 🙂
