This looks neat, but sadly I have no context for Bloodborne.
Is there any particular reason to add the Ranged Attack move instead of modifying Unleash?
Aaron Griffin The way ranged attacks work in Bloodborne is very peculiar to that game, and players familiar with the video game complained about Unleash feeling unsatisfying in those situations.
It’s not my preference to slavishly try to reproduce the combat in From Software games in an RPG (I think this is the mistake a lot of adaptations make) but this seemed core to the Bloodborne feel and so I chose not to ignore it.
Holy shit can’t wait to read this😎
Kyle Thompson I see. Stapling people to walls and things is a primary mode of attack?
Aaron Griffin The ranged attack does considerably less damage than melee attacks, but it stuns enemies and leaves them open to get hit with a melee attack. From a simulationist perspective it makes no sense why a gun would be weaker than an axe etc., but it gives the game’s combat its own distinctive feel.
Looks cool, I wish I had the time to try it.
Gregor Vuga I will advertise future playtests here, so if the time matches up for you feel free to join in!
Any chance of a printer-friendly version?
Motley Rudgutter Sure I can make that happen in the next couple days!
Cool, thanks. Also, The Hunter starts with three moves and has three ‘A new Hunter move’ advances but only has five Hunter moves total. You should probably also factor in those unfactored weapon tags i.e. head (+1 harm) and bladed (+1 harm) should just be added to the Rifle Spear’s 2-harm and the Hunter’s Axe’s range tag should read “hand/close’.
Motley Rudgutter Thanks for spotting that! The formatting for the weapons follows that in the Urban Shadows book IIRC. EDIT: Checked the book and you’re right. I still would like some kind of description of what the tags do in there though…
Motley Rudgutter Printer friendly version is now available at the link above!
Following! 🙂
