Anyone tried running Victorian Urban Shadows?

I just finished Penny Dreadful, and it seems like US

would be the perfect system for something similar. The faction interests would just have to aim at something bigger than local city politics.

(Monster hearts crossed my mind, too, but the archetype behaviors and character dynamics would be all wrong).

  1. I don’t think US would be the best option. You’ve only one for each type of monster (apart from witches) so no faction. Monster Heart or Fate are a better choice in my opinion.

  2. I’m totally biased, but I think US would work perfectly as-is in Penny Dreadful. Malcolm is The Aware, Vanessa The Oracle, Ethan the Wolf, Victor is a bit weird but maybe The Wizard or Veteran?

  3. Cameron Mount I meant in terms of aspirations to feud over, politically. The factions in PD seem to focus rather more on Ives / apocalyptic power, rather than power over London

  4. simone biagini in terms of protagonists, there’s only one of each type in the show, too (except for a brief appearance by big daddy werewolf in season 3, and the two Frankenstein Monsters. But either of those could be NPC’d out).

  5. J Stein What I was trying to explain is that US works well with factions Vampire PC and Vampire NPCs, Werewolf PC and pack (NPCs),

Faerie PC and Faeries court (NPCs)

PD characters are lonely, joining forces to front the unknown.

US characters can be the only one of their class, but you’ll lose the faction interaction. Can be played like that but I think that doing so something will be lost.

But it’s simply a feeling, the rules will allow to play PD.

The city instead is not important, could be something vaguer, a “world-wide” city, a “dark world”.

  6. simone biagini you have a fair point. I was rather thinking of the mortal police, Scotland Yard, etc as the mortal faction; the various witches (nightcomer and daywalker) as Power; the Frankenstein monsters and their assembled army harlots, vampires, lucifer as Night. The werewolf was the only one that didn’t slot in cleanly for me.

  7. Cameron Mount could you share a copy of the vessel alpha? I’m trying to stat up Brona, and none of the other archetypes really fit.
