One of my groups characters is a hunter, who got trained in a school, which got destroyed by werewolves. He wants to go back to the ruins to retrieve a useful item he knows was there in a secret room.

Now I thought about making this scene a custom action, because it seems boring to play the whole thing out, but the options I came up with as well as the reward all seems so clear cut. Not open ended as usual with the moves. Is this an ok custom action or should I change something up?

Searching the hunter school:

Roll with Mind. On a hit you find what you were looking for.

On a 7-9 choose one of these:

The werewolves will find out you were here

You attract the attention of a malicious spirit

You activated hidden traps while searching. Take 2 damage.

On a miss something goes terribly wrong

  1. I’d roll with Mortality. It’s basically searching a place of power. Plus it lets them mark the faction.

The options feel like they need more flavor. Here’s some off the cuff stuff that’s probably not that much better:

On a 10+, you find what you were looking for. On a 7-9, you find it but choose 1:

    – wolves are waiting, and get the jump on you.

    – the spirit of an old teacher protects it, they call in an old debt they have on you.

    – it’s booby trapped, and you’ll need help to get it safely.

If you can, work in some game specifics into these choices. Name the wolf pack, or make the booby trap fae-specific if you have a fae PC.

  2. I guess all my 7-9 results share the same idea of “you can get it if…” and it could involve other things in the game, maybe resulting in one or two entire sessions about this artifact. It’ll make it much more interesting if they work for it.
