I ran my first ever game of Urban Shadows last week, the first ever game I actually gm’d and it was awesome. I had a wizard (who was a voudon who lived in a Winnebago with a portal to another dimension in his bathroom, I’m not kidding. I let it happen because come on that’s hysterical) a specter (woman who died in the 1920s who likes to go to the “pictures” because she can get in for free and she’s still constantly amazed by them), a fae (who was a drunken hedonist who liked to get mortals intoxicated and extract insane promises from them), and a Hunter (who’s main prey were warewolves, who run local law enforcement). Everyone had a fantastic time and I will explain more later. I think the best thing was how the faction rolls made it exceedingly easy for me to make a story hooks. The whole session was based on a miss on a faction roll and we pulled everyone in on that. I ended up not needing any of the story hooks I had preplanned. It was great to use the faction rolls to build a story organically.

  1. Also, I did end up setting it in the multiple small shore towns in Monmouth county nj that I had the idea for and it ran great like that. I’m not sure how it would work in a less fully urbanized area (all the towns run into each other and geographically the area is not THAT big). But multiple cities works fine when they’re close.

  2. So awesome Erin! I am humbled beyond words that your first GM experience was with Urban Shadows. I hope you continue to love sitting in the MC’s chair, it’s so fulfilling! Sounds like a solid cast of protagonists too.

I’m so glad you joined our game at Dreamation, it has led to this very cool point. 😀

  3. Started at Monmouth Mall, spread through Asbury, Long Branch, Ocean, Ocean Grove, Neptune/Neptune City, Bradley Beach and Belmar. Mortality faction is mostly based out of Freehold but that’s not come up. Warewolves run the sheriffs dept and other law enforcement, fae run a lot of the Benny bars (bar A, the headliner, ect) as well as Paradise. Vamps are part of a crime syndicate responsible for the current heroin “epidemic” in Monmouth and ocean counties. Also lol I pass through wanamassa on my way to work every day!

  4. Also the most powerful wizard in central jersey is the manager of east meets west in the Monmouth mall and there’s a nj 101.5 late night radio host who is an immortal with a Spector linked to him (vaguely based on Cecil from welcome to night vale) who has a Swiss cheese memory because he can’t process the fact that he can come back to life.

  5. Yeah I wanted him to seem like a complete burn out to anyone who wasn’t in the know.

Also there’s a group of religious zealot hunters based in ocean grove. Because fuck it that whole town is owned by the church why not.

  6. That really sounds cool.  i worked the mall back in the day, as well.  (and grew up in Neptune CIty) lot’s of cool things you have going on.    Love the mental image of a bunch of fist pumping fae at Bar A.  I literally laughed out load when i read that. There really are quite a few cool places you can bring in for an US campaign around the area.

I hope you post more from your game.  looks really neat.
