“CONFESSION: Confide in someone by confessing your sins to someone. Increase a Bond with them by 1, but know that the knowledge you are imparting to them will put them in harm’s way. When you Burn this Bond double its effects.” (p.97)
What is the “double its effects”? If a character burn this Bond, can he change the roll from 6- to 10+? Or burn 2 Bond Points to activate?
I’m assuming there is no mechanical effect. My thoughts is that it refers to the way a relationship with someone worsens when you burn a bond to them.
Basically. The next time you burn a bond with that person something more terrible than normal (for burning a bond) happens to them.
So the effects of “doubling” the burned Bond’s punitive effects will vary from GM to GM. You really should just take it as a note that to put them in danger next time.
For example if someone confesses their secret ID to their SO then the next time they burn a bond with that person might cause one of their enemies to discover he or she is important. Or they try to step in and help you and get hurt. Or something bad happens while you’re being heroic elsewhere and they’re angry at you for not being there for them.
It could be better worded.
I didn’t write this one, but I think the intent is for it be doubly effective in terms of being beneficial, so that it goes up by two stages; a 6- to a 10+, as you say. That way you’re more tempted to Burn the Bond and create drama. That said, because the benefits are so big, I’d think as an EIC I’d go with Luke in making the consequences felt in the fiction, especially because it’s personal and has to do with a character’s sins.

When you “Increase your Bond with them by 1”, can that bring you above your Bond threshold? And can you only Confess to someone you already have a Bond with, or can you use it to create a new Bond?
Nothing can bring you above your Bond Threshold (except using Advancement Points). You can confess to anyone you like or make a new one if you want to.
