I’m still amazed at how hard it is to get a face to game of anything but DnD or Pathfinder. Ugh! I might just give up and only run online.

I was just lamenting my inability to get an ongoing D&D game. Give my group an indie game and off they go. (I want both. I want a D&D campaign and also 3-10 session games of anything else)
Its all people know or want to play. It was hard to just get my group to play a superhero game.
That is what I do. I can’t find face to face that isn’t d&d or pathfinder. So I run games online exclusively. It’s not bad. I get lots of different players from all over which is great.
Player buy in for games that aren’t a variation of D&D is very difficult in my group. I think taking away their ability to become demigods is high on the list of reasons…but i find it very difficult to tell compelling stories in that kind of medium, personally.
I’m starting to wear them down, though. And letting them know narrative control is just as powerful as having 8d6 Sneak Attacks.
Try luring them over to the dark side by playing Dungeon World. Or run a one-shot with some people and watch for the converts. You just need 1 or 2 committing to a regular game to get a start. Then you can slowly convert some others.
You’re where?
🙂 instead of asking, just state, “next week, we’re trying out a new game…” and go Nike (Just Do It)
Michael Phillips Really? It seems like everybody is playing 5e around here.
Jmz Haz I’m near Lansing MI.
Derrick Kapchinsky I run. I can always get enough players for a hangout game. I have a group that I can run PbtA face to face. But I’m trying to branch out to more folks and run at different game stores and I can’t get a whole group to sign up. When people actually try PbtA once I usually win then over. It’s just getting then to start.
Robert Slaughter Yeah that’s what I tend to do.
if you are going to do that, though, you might want to provide pregens unless it is a super fast char gen game. No engagement makes session zero painful.
Michael Phillips Dungeon World!
Lonnie Spangler Well, the OP wants to get away from D&D, and DW isn’t a big shift.
You should offer to run single sessions of other systems on a night that isn’t your usual night for gaming. If they like a different system, they’ll let you know.
Use Dungeon World and say it’s a preview of DnD 6 !
B Cook I don’t have any interest in running DnD or Pathfinder in hopes of finding PbtA players. After decades of playing then I just find I don’t enjoy trad games that much anymore. I shouldn’t complain I do have good players to play other games with. I’m just trying to get some one shots going at game stores and not many are biting.
If you’re in Lansing you should come to Forge Midwest. There is a lot of indie games that get run and you may meet a few other Michiganders.
Edit: Sorry, I don’t know.how that link got on there and I can’t get it off.

As a role player who almost exclusively DMs, I pick the game I want to run for my group. Usually I have couple of systems I am interested in trying, and the group will give me preferences base on the choices I offer. But there are so many more players than DMs that you have the power if you want to run a game.
Sadly, Everett Washington. I GM when I can, and also play. My regular group switched to Sunday, the one day of the week I can’t play…So I’m looking for another group.
I’m a lynnwooder myself. A combination of social fright, time commitment, and experience with bad players keeps me from the table. Have you tried Mugu Games or the AFK Tavern Jmz Haz?
I find it so annoying here in Virginia.
David Rothfeder I may just do that. Do they have another web presence other than the WordPress site?
Not particularly. I’d ping Willow Palecek (oops, just did) for more info.
Darrin Michelson I’m unfamiliar with Mugu games, but I have been to AFK, and it’s within walking distance. This is good, because I don’t drive. 🙂
Mugu is up the street from you then. South from the AFK, past QFC, in the same parking lot with the Harbor Freight and the DMV. The store is spacious with plenty of tables to game at. Give it a look sometime.
