My gut instinct says “total” because the game is generally specific about telling you when you have to spend gems, and rolling gems for a specific character doesn’t make a lot of sense. Of course, this probably means people will succeed on this roll a lot. Which is probably by design. Though I can also definitely see a somewhat darker version of the rule where you DO spend gems on this roll…

And do older dragons take more Shadow?
… But unless I miss my mark, your statistics are always improving, so the frequency of taking shadow points (… At least, from failed rolls!) decreases, even as the stakes from becoming your shadowself increase with age.
