The current (and more or less final) rules for my quick & dirty soap opera hack: I’m trying to keep this light by depending on pre-existing knowledge of PbtA games.

I’m still toying about with my soap opera hack, Liquid Soap, and I’ve come up with an alternative to the standard stat highlighting system to mark experience:

– When you roll with an unchecked stat, check it and mark experience.

– Uncheck all your stats at the start of a new episode.

So, instead of being encouraged to emphasize a particular set of moves related to one stat, you are encouraged to show many different facets of your PC by rolling with as many different stats as possible. Has this or anything like it been done in any other PbtA game? What are the upsides to it?

The soap opera move: when you conspire & plot, roll+drama.

The soap opera move: when you conspire & plot, roll+drama.

The soap opera move: when you conspire & plot, roll+drama. On a hit, they do what you want them to do; on a 7-9, choose one:

– You are overheard: who else knows about your plot now?

– There is a misunderstanding: what do they do that you didn’t want?

– They make a demand: what do you have to do that they want?

I must look away from daytime TV while trying to work.

I’m just going over the current draft of Troublemakers again and had a thought about one of the basic moves. Currently, the tell a lie move is an open invitation to create a never-ending pit of lies: if you don’t take the “They drop it for now” option, then you will be asked more questions about the subject, inviting you to create more lies and so on. That’s actually a pretty good model of a child lying to adults, but could be a bit of an issue in play: do you keep rolling to tell a lie until you get a 10+ or a miss?

I’m considering a change to it, whereby on a 10+, they accept your story at face value, but on a 7-9, you have to choose between a) providing some evidence or getting someone to back you up before they believe you or b) you admit that they caught you in a lie but you take -1 trouble for owning up! I like the tempting deal offered there, especially as it could mean betraying the other kids to save your own neck, naturally triggering a falling out with them.

The sixth installment in the series of supplements for Dungeon World describing an alternative sci-fi setting called The Continent Adrift. The voice of the narrator comes across very strongly in this one, perhaps too strongly? I enjoyed the hell out of writing in that voice though!
