A Heel Hack

A Heel Hack

A Heel Hack

I know sometimes the “cheat to win” ability on the Heel Move can cause consternation. Here’s a hack to it that involves a little bit of bookkeeping, but may be of value to structuring the “sense” of it:

You can only use the Heel Move as many times as you have Audience. When your Audience resets, so does this counter. If you gain Audience, you get another “slot” to use it; if you lose Audience and you’ve already hit your cap, there’s no additional change.

Treating the Heel Move as a limited resource by itself may create the mindfulness of “picking your spots” and only using it when it really heightens the drama that sometimes is hard to convey otherwise.

Ok, I promised John Stavropoulos that I would recommend him some Shinsuke Nakamura matches.

Off the top of my head:

vs. Kota Ibushi from Wrestle Kingdom 9 – this was one of the first long singles matches I saw from Nakamura and I loved it, top to bottom (and Ibushi is FIVE FIRE EMOJIS himself, and might be in the WWE Cruiserweight Tournament!)

vs. AJ Styles from Wrestle Kingdom 10 – This was maybe only my third-favorite match on this card, but a lot of people liked it a whole lot and it may be a good entry point for folks who don’t follow any Japanese wrestling at all

vs. Okada from the 2015 G1 Tournament – Okada is my favorite wrestler in New Japan and this match is both of them at their best

Recommendations from other Nakamura fans I’ve received, but that I haven’t seen or don’t remember well personally include:

vs. Tanahashi, 2015 G1 FINAL

vs. Okada, 2014 G1 FINAL

vs. Tanahashi, Wrestle Kingdom 8

Any other recommendations?

I received a really interesting (and nice) email asking about running WWWRPG as a larp.

Past my standard joke (“well, then you’re just actually wrestling”), it’s something worth thinking about, especially for wrestling matches!

My first thought is to minimize resolution and lean heavily on the elements that already resemble structured freeform larp, like the heel/face dynamic and Creative booking all results. That’s 90% of the game right there.

When players want to either prevail over a foe (win a promo battle, swerve the booking in a match, etc), what if there’s a small hand of cards everyone starts with. Everyone still has stats, too. Stats correspond to suits, and you add your stat to the same-suited card, high card wins, something like that. So in play you play, play, play, compare two cards, Creative frames the fallout, play, play and so on.

I dunno. Larp isn’t my strong suit! How would you do it?

“Current Starr Wrestling Alliance World Champion, Jake “The Money” Drasco is on the verge of making history as the longest reigning champion in SWA. His two-year title run is marked by trickery and cowardice, and the crowd is hungry for a change. So, on the eve of SWA’s biggest event of the year, management has booked a show to decide the #1 contender for the belt, and you’re on the card. Opportunities like this can make careers, so be ready to leave it all in the ring. Go out there and make ’em pop!”

Sounds fun!

I’m doing another pass on the Gimmicks as an inclusive set (including putting all of the Moves in an spreadsheet so I can start the Move Deck), and it’s pretty interesting!

I think I posted before about power creep in the statlines, and how I unintentionally was giving the newer Gimmicks higher (or lower) stats than the basic ones. Well, reviewing all of the Moves together, there’s also some “Move creep” in the sense that the newer Gimmicks have more Moves available than the older ones. Some variation is fine and expected, but once you take out the stat-boosting Moves, it pops out as a trend.

Editing is important and I think makes for stronger Gimmicks, so I’m doing a little pruning here and there on the newer ones, but I thought it would be interesting to point out as a process thing.

New Kickstarter Update! A 120-card deck of all of the Moves from every Gimmick thus far. There’s a basic use, but feel free to brainstorm all the fun weird ways you can use these in play!

A non-game thing, but it’s me and wrestling so WHAT I SAY GOES: I wrote a personal essay about being a pacifist but loving the everloving shit out of Shibata, who’s one of the stiffest wrestlers on the planet. It’s in this issue of the Pro Wrestling Feelings zine, which is done by a good friend of mine here in Chicago.

It’s kind of a wrestlebud issue – the publisher, me, the artist (who is also the new Gimmick artist for the Kickstarter) and the author of the other essay are the folks I hang out and watch wrestling with. There’s also an old interview with Ultramantis Black and a new one with another zinester (the guy who does Atomic Elbow).

Anyway, it’s $5, it’s good stuff, support independent publishing, etc etc.
