Each time a specific spell is cast it gains in power and complexity. Especially as the caster adapts the spell to more purposes.

Normally spell casters create a formula and only use it themselves to limit its growth.

Eventually a spell evolves to being an elemental. Instead of manifesting as a burst of energy or other more or less discrete phenomenon, it manifests as an object or creature. Usually based on the subconscious of the caster or casters. They have to be commanded to do their task or wielded but have some instincts/programming.

Eventually elementals evolve to spirits which often appear human (as their increasing complexity causes them to be viewed more anthropomorphically) like but remain soulless tools connected to the caster.

Spells, elementals and spirits can be dreadfully powerful. Especially if summoned by large groups of people. Or powered by a living sacrifice.

Spirits eventually evolve into beings at which point they gain a soul, emotions and so on. They usually have childlike emotions combined with great power and intelligence.

Patient zero supernaturals are usually former spells. For example the first vampire might have been a curse of illness. Now it reproduces by sacrificing a living person to create a new vampire (which might progress straight to spirit but take a while to become a free willed being). Yuki-Onna was a siege defense enchantment that was left summoned for a long time until she became a being. Etc.

Possible glitch for use magic includes your spell evolving. A monstrous could be a spell once overcast by the expert or spell-slinger.

A spell formula might collapse (it dies) so next time you have that effect you might need to take more time to create a new formula.

Etc.

God rest ye merry lycanthropes

God rest ye merry lycanthropes

God rest ye merry lycanthropes,

Let nothing bother you.

Remember that the wolvesbane all died out in ’42.

The werewolf hunter’s stuck at home,

Suffering with the flu.

Oh the world is yours when the full moon rises high.

The world is yours when the full moon rises high.

Electrum came in vogue this year,

The silver’s almost gone.

The only blessed weapons

Are on hock at EZ Pawn.

In short there’s nothing here to stop a lycanthropic throng.

Oh the world is yours when the full moon rises high.

The world is yours when the full moon rises high.

Half of mankind is infected,

We’re creatures one and all.

The rest are used for exercise,

Or are mounted to a wall.

It might be fun to sit and watch civilization fall.

On a matter of session frameworks.

On a matter of session frameworks.

On a matter of session frameworks.

First things first. A lot of experienced GMs and players don’t need session frameworks to run a game. In fact holding too tightly to a framework is detrimental to free flowing play. However they can make a good tool for new GMs.

As to why I created a frame work. For the fun of it, to play with the system and to jump start my writing for the winter break I’ve started writing fiction by taking inspiration from essentially running a solo Masks campaign (I’m the GM and five characters). I’ve already posted some of this

Since I’m the only one involved I set my a standard for what constitutes a full session. Then I realized the thing above: this could be useful for newbie GMs

Here’s the framework

Starting session moves

Starting Fight

Character Focus scenes. Each scene has one focus PC and one support PC the situation revolves around one of the GM Playbook moves.

Continue until every player has been focus at least once and support at least once. Preferably each person having the same number of times support and focus.

Another scene with every PC possibly set up next sessions starting fight.

For example, this how I’m handling the first “session” of my fiction/solo campaign

Roll Legacy and Janus Secret Identity moves

Fight with villain

Focus: Katja Support: Minako

Bull Move(s): Love/Rival issues

Focus: Ayako Support: Kyou

Janus Move: Lives Crossover

Focus: Kyou Support: Katja

Legacy Move: Answer family concerns

Focus: Minako Support: Umeko

Protege Move: Bestow wisdom

Focus: Umeko Support: Ayako

Transformed Move: Show them how they’re hated.

Collective scene: Training discussion

End questions

Now within a session or two; once people are comfortable with the game, situations and characters; that this framework would be discarded or just slowly loosened until it is gone.

But to start it might serve for a jump start. So thought I’d post regarding it.

I’m putting this in Fan Made Content rather than Actual Play since it’s me running a solo thing with just myself and…

I’m putting this in Fan Made Content rather than Actual Play since it’s me running a solo thing with just myself and characters I made (my normal RP crew is tied up currently in Pathfinder).

In any case, this bit has no die rolls or such, this is the story written based on answering the questions for “how the team came together”.

I have a Bull (shapeshifting brick), a Legacy (Okinawan mystic), a Protege (an alien air-bender trained by a mystic), a Janus (a cancer-survivor who gained a magic spear) and a Transformed (an arrogant girl who was transformed into a living bronze woman as a result of a medical experiment to save her life)

I hope no one feels this is inappropriate.

Was goofing around with lots of random character generators and the Masks playbooks.

This is what I have so far. (Partially random, partially chosen)

Curious how people would model this character idea…it’s a rather bizarre concept.

Curious how people would model this character idea…it’s a rather bizarre concept.

The basic concept is a shapeshifter that can take on various forms from pop-culture.  Basically, power by cosplay. (I had eight forms in addition to the original guy’s). He got it by walking into one of those magic costume shops you see in some TV shows on Halloween specials or in some internet fiction, but instead of buying a costume, he disrupted the magic accidentally and absorbed it.

This sounds like basic thematic shapeshifting but the twist is that each form has its own mind and soul (4 male and 4 female). Either a soul trapped in the costume was moved to him or his own soul split into eight separate new identities.  Regardless, they mostly view each other as siblings that have to share one body….I envisioned a peanut gallery going on constantly for whoever was in control at the moment.

Eventual aim for them was to each get their own body to live in.

I later did a variation of this where there was only the main character’s soul and personality but it would be filtered through whatever character she was channeling…for example, channeling a villainous and seductive werewolf from an anime caused her to become somewhat of a bastard with wolf like powers and somewhat more charisma…channeling a reckless loose cannon cop gave her some martial arts skills and a loose temper…the third persona she started with was a pre-teen magical girl…she got very childish and idealistic….some hair color and body shape changed, but age and gender did not….her basic moral character was the same so she stayed good, though the werewolf persona was much more willing to manipulate people to get what she wanted

The second one is rather easy to do….it’s the one with nine fully separate souls and minds trapped in one body that is difficult to model….
