My hunters and I are approaching the final mystery of an arc, and I’m having some trouble figuring out how to design it. The basic gist is that War, Pestilence, and Famine, (four horsemen of the apocalypse) have been sending monsters onto earth to hunt down and kill people. The one who kills the most gets to choose how the apocalypse arrives this time. The hunters have spent the last 3 mysteries hunting down each of their monsters.

I had a general idea that Death would need to perform some sort of ritual to “tally up the score,” before the apocalypse can actually take place. I didn’t have specific ideas, so I spoke with the hunters to discuss what they think would be an awesome last scenario. They came up with the idea of going into the underworld to try and stop whatever the ritual it is, either by freeing the captured souls or some other undetermined means.

Here’s where the questions come in. This seems like a fundamentally different plot than the normal mystery, as there isn’t specifically a monster to hunt down. I’m considering adopting the More Weirdness Phenomena rules for this mystery, but not sure where to go from there. It also has the hunters primarily in hostile territory, so I’m wondering if I should have some sort of stealth component / system to go along with it.

Do y’all have any thoughts/advice for how to set up a mystery like this? I’m happy to clarify anything I wasn’t specific enough about.

Hi all.

Hi all.

Hi all. hoping to start a small Boston face to face group for an ongoing pbta game. I was thinking Monster of the week or monsterhearts or urban shadows or masks would be fun but I’m open to running others if everyone else wants it.

If anyone is interested and lives in the Boston area let me know.

I was thinking we could have weekly meetings at Pandemonium or somewhere else depending… but finding a location shouldn’t be too difficult.

If anyone is interested let me know and I’ll set up a meeting place.

How do you handle the Monstrous “Pure Drive” curse?

How do you handle the Monstrous “Pure Drive” curse?

How do you handle the Monstrous “Pure Drive” curse?

Whether as player or keeper, what experiences have you had with this aspect? My concern is that it would lead to a very one-dimensional character.

If Pure Drive: Hate, do you hate everything or does the player create a list of hated things? If Pure Drive: Anger, are you angry at everything, or do we allow that there are certain triggers? Or just whatever? What does Pure Drive: Pride even mean?

My experience in years past (okay, decades past) in other games is that characters with a single drive can tend to become comical and/or annoying to other players. Any suggestions on how to avoid that?

Quote from the Monstrous Playbook for reference:

Pure Drive: One emotion rules you. Pick from: hunger, hate, anger, fear, jealousy, greed, joy, pride, envy, lust, cruelty. Whenever you have a chance to indulge the emotion, you must do so immediately or act under pressure to resist.

That’s right, I turned the Playbooks into a Google doc that you can edit. No need to print them out. Save a copy to your own drive, then share an editable version with your Hunters. Hopefully this will make playing over the internet a little easier. (I also added all the special luck outcomes for every book.)

New Mystery: Hairy Alpha Bro.

New Mystery: Hairy Alpha Bro.

New Mystery: Hairy Alpha Bro.

The local college campus had an epic rager last night. Sure, the dean banned Alpha Omega Omega from having parties, but they kept it on the DL and it was lit AF. Now the party has wound down and some of the party-goers are going to wake up with awful hangovers. Others are going to wake up as large, hairy, blood-thirsty monsters.

A mystery that takes place on a college campus, with every college stereotype plus werewolves. Enjoy!

Not sure if this is an appropriate place to post this, but I’ve noticed the MotW subreddit hasn’t had any new posts in about a month. It’s not a huge community, but it used to get a few posts a week. It has suddenly it stopped getting new posts! I tried to create a new post and I got the alert saying “you’re not allowed to post here.” I wonder if others are having similar difficulties posting to the subreddit.

Apologies if a post like this is inappropriate for this page.

New to MotW but I had to bite when I saw it. Just some quick questions for the community:

I’ve played DnD for years but I really like what I’v’e seen with this. There are differences though, obviously. What should I pay attention to when creating content? For example, do long form or short form mysteries tend to be better managed? Should it be a mystery as opposed to the classic ‘Adventure?’

The game rules state that a party can only have one of each hunter type. What sort of impact does this have? If I wanted to homebrew a narrative for my players akin to Stephen King’s ‘It’, would that unbalance the system?

Any other ideas or the like are totally welcome and appreciated, excited to jump into this
