I made an r20 group for the system and our community’s collective lfg in the hopes new players will be able to find us easier than I did. It was so hard to find a community for this system.
So I started gming a play by post game. And it’s going pretty well so far. If anyone is interested in following it it updates daily and there is plenty of hot PC and NPC gossip fodder. Start with the wiki’s for character introductions.
For our PCs have
Russell the hapless, confused Angel
Robin the Mortal, a sweetie who has a crush on that new kid Russell
Jaylen the Infernal who loves his mama, no not that mama, his parents who ignore him, but the other one, the one who truly loves him.
Willow the Serpentine, a vicious snake who loves toying with and destroying people.
Holly the Hollow, who may be an actual cinnamon roll, we have yet to confirm.
Session two of our Monsterhearts 2 game was this past Saturday. Donna Strickland, my dangerous, 19 year old Wyrm with a hoard of CDs in her basement bedroom, is shaping up to be the most monstrous character I’ve ever played in an RPG.
I shared this on my on G+ page and put a thread about the session’s event on Twitter over the weekend, so people have probably already seen this. But I like sharing it. Content warning for physical abuse and necrophilia.
A bit of background. Donna the Wyrm and Vivian the Ghoul have had the hots for each other for a while now. When we got to the Your Backstory part of making characters, Vivian’s player said Donna was: “the one who reminded her what love was when she thought death had stolen it away forever.” I reciprocated by saying that Donna saw Vivian as “treasure” (everyone else is just “currency”) and that her shy, closed off nature roused Donna’s “want what they can’t have” nature of a dragon. The two had flirted a bit in session one, but nothing really happened. That all changed in last session.
So Vivian parks her motorcycle in the Speedway Gas Station parking lot where Donna is just finishing up her shift.
“You ready to go somewhere?” asks Vivian. (The two had made tentative plans to hang out after Donna got off work.)
“Sure. But can I go home and change first?” replies Donna. “I want to get out of this uniform.” (Her Speedway uniform is just khakis and a blue polo shirt, nothing terrible. Donna just wants to get Vivian back to her bedroom.)
The two drive to Donna’s place; the Wyrm in her car, and the Ghoul following on her motorcycle.
Back in Donna’s basement bedroom, Donna invites Vivan to peruse her CD collection while she goes to change. Vivian notices the smashed window and broken phonograph cover.
“What happened there?” asks Vivian.
“Some asshole chucked a phone through my window.” replies Donna. (It was actually Ingrid the Fae and Evelyn the Queen, two other PCs, but Donna and Vivian don’t know that.) “It’s over there, see?” She points to a chunky flip phone. (It’s 2003 by the way.)
“You should call the last number dialed and see who answers.” says Vivian. “That way you can figure out who’s phone it is!”
“That’s a fantastic idea.” Donna replies, grabbing the mystery phone, sitting on the bed and patting a spot next to her. Vivian sits down, and Donna drapes an arm over the little Ghoul, pulling her in close and pressing up against her. (I totally miss my Turn Someone On roll here.) Excited by the proximity of her crush, Donna fumbles the phone, and in her attempt to catch it, smashes it so hard into Vivian’s face that her nose starts bleeding.
But Vivian’s dead (though none of the characters, including Vivian herself, know that yet) and the blood that starts leaking from her face is this thick, black gunk. Like chocolate pudding. Vivian frantically asks for a bathroom, runs in, and tries to clean up her face. Donna is mortified, and knocks tentatively on the door to check on her guest. Vivian assures Donna everything is OK, and Donna goes back to the mystery phone. (The last number dialed was Tim, the County Police office who frequents the Speedway. He makes arrangements to pick it up from Donna at work tomorrow.) Vivian emerges, nose slightly swollen, but continuing to claim she’s fine. She and Donna decide to go get something to eat at the local Burger King, which is also where kids in the town hang out. They take Vivian’s motorcycle, at Donna’s request, specifically so she can wrap her arms around her injured crush.
Walking through the BK parking lot, Vivian is approached by Sophie, one of the Queen’s flunkies. Donna doesn’t really pay attention to their conversation, until Sophie starts harassing Vivian, saying the Ghoul’s nose looks fucked up.
“Your nose looks fucked up, bitch!” snarls Donna, swinging a fist at Sophie. She’s aiming to break Sophie’s nose, but her aim is off. Because of how they’re standing, she punches Vivian instead. Right in the nose. Again. (I whiffed my Lash Out Physically roll really bad here.) Donna starts to apologise, but Vivian isn’t crying. She takes her hands away from her nose, looks Donna right in the eye and says “Hit me again.” (Vivian’s player nails her Turn Someone On roll with a 9. Everyone around the table, myself included, goes “Oh holy shit.”)
After a second’s hesitation, Donna winds up, and cracks Vivian across the cheek. Dead black blood spatters the BK parking lot. Then Donna grabs Vivian by the collar, licks the trickle of blood off her face (it tastes like salty burnt toast), and shoves her tongue down the Ghoul’s throat. (I chose “Give myself to you” as Donna’s reaction, and this seemed most appropriate.) The kids in the parking lot are staring at them, and Sophie turns away muttering something about freaks. When the two finally break for air Donna suggests they go into the Burger King bathroom to clean up. Their faces are a mess, what with that black blood smeared everywhere. Vivian agrees, and they head inside.
But they don’t clean up. As soon as the bathroom door closes, Donna pushes Vivian into one of the stalls and they fuck. Turns out this is Vivian’s first time; it hurts, but she likes it. Afterwards Donna wipes some gunk off Vivian’s cheek and whispers, “Anything you want, baby.” Vivian replies “Promise to make me feel alive again.” (Mechanically, here’s what happened. Vivian’s player creates an additional Hunger for her. The player gets this look in her eyes and gleefully says “Vivian’s new hunger is PAIN.” The table goes nuts. This is where she decides Vivian was a virgin. As the Wyrm, Donna has to promise to get something for Vivian. We discuss if this has to be an object, and decide no, it can be something less tangible. That’s when Vivian’s player comes up with the promise to make poor dead Vivian feel alive again. The player and I are grinning this whole time at how fucked up all of this is.
And it is. I didn’t plan to play her this way, but Donna has now become someone who is willing to physically abuse her partner. At their request, sure, but still. And Vivian’s dead. She’s a Ghoul with a Hunger for Thrills and Pain. What kind of fucked up things will she ask Donna to do in an attempt to feel alive again? Whatever it is, Donna’s most likely going to do it, as she’s promised Vivian she would.
i share it this videos, it’s a little season of Monsterhearts, played with a group of friends from Latinoamérica… the zero session is about the creation of characters and the high school (in Malibu Beach!), and the others are the played sessions, with a lot of drama and darkness… i hope your enjoy this…
Bonus track is a little session dedicated to analise the play and those elements that we most liked (i included some resources in spanish to play the game).

The quiet before the storm! Lots of great scenes in Episode 6 of Mercy Falls, lots of good play technique, and yet this is still our “episode right before the Red Wedding episode.”

The session before last, the Fae did a deal with the other fae that boiled down to:
I renounce all claim to rule my side of the fae war and make one of the Queen’s gang members (the one who is always trying to usurp the Queen) my proxy.
She signs off on everything the other side wants.
The fae stay away from our world (there are some exceptions, but it’s understood that if these apply, the fae in question is playing by mortal world rules and keeps fae stuff out of it).
The fae leave my world alone and don’t try to hurt or kill me.
The Wolf gets to sent her pack (she was raised by wolves) to the fae realm and to visit them whenever she wants, but it’s understood that she’s a guest there.
The Wolf is my champion only, not the fae champion, but let it be known that she’s resigning and was NOT defeated in combat (a really important point to the Wolf).
So, last session, I had consequences.
This started with Connor, a fae who could turn into a rabbit, trying to hide in the mortal world with the Witch, who wanted no part of this. Connor didn’t want to go back to the fae realm because he’d be executed.
But, if he stays, the contract is null and void.
The Wolf wanted to name the local gang leader the fae champion — he was originally totally separate from the Queen’s gang, but the player took second gang and the Queen had sex with him, so he wasn’t sure about conflicts of interest.
Well, says the Queen, who’s had sex with the Fae and the Wolf, it’s really dumb to kill your subjects and we don’t want the fae finding out about the broken contract, so obviously, there’s only one thing to do.
We take over the fae realm.
This suits the gang leader who’s now part of the Queen’s gang, as it removes the conflict of interest.
Also, the whole reason the fae made bargains with folks like the Witch’s grandmother was “otherwise, demons”.
The fae are gone.
The gang leader kept not being a jerk. Despite my intentions, he’s been astonishingly decent and understanding and helpful.
He’s obviously got to be the demon.
And a session or two ago, we learned that the Wolf was intended to be a sacrifice to a demon, only that probably didn’t happen. I’m guessing the Witch’s grandmother was involved. Or maybe the counterpart to the grandmother, whom the Wolf killed.
I mean, okay, it gets complicated, as it should. And that’s before we get into how effed up things are with the Witch’s family, how alien the Queen and her coterie are, and the vendetta the Wolf has with the school nurse, who used to be her friend.
But, that leaves me with the question of how the heck do I cover the upcoming invasion of the fae realm with the Monsterhearts rules.
A local gamer who’s not in this game said to use countdown clocks and make moves. I’ve my copy of Monster of the Week, my copy of Urban Shadows, and over two weeks until the next session, so will see what I can come up with.
I have to admit this isn’t a challenge I had anticipated.
So this weekend at #ForgeMidwest I ran Camp Monster Hearts.
So this weekend at #ForgeMidwest I ran Camp Monster Hearts. It was probably the best con game I ever ran. Tim Koppang played an Infernal name Poe, tom Fendt played a Werewolf named Luna, and Stephanie Strickling played a Witch named Marina. The set up established that Luna was in the middle of a fight with an NPC named Sam with Poe watching, and that the administrator Tanya is missing and that Marina knew more about it than she should. We also established that Poe wanted to Fuck an NPC named Jessie. Luna also wanted to fuck Jessie, and be friends with Marina. Marina wanted to Fuck Poe.
We started with the fight starting at the wake up bell, in which Luna easily beat up Sam (who was a swimmer, no match for a werewolf in any form), but since this is Monster Hearts, did so sexily and turned on Poe, who gave her his switch blade. Marina meanwhile was sneaking out of the Big House (where the administrator lives and works) and making it to the rec hall for breakfast.
Poe made it to breakfast late, but Luna gave up on that. The project director Carl wouldn’t let Poe in as punishment for being late, so Marina tried helping out but Hexing Carl with a wither. Unintended consequences meant that when Carl’s teeth started falling out mid sentence new needle like teeth painfully grew in their place (wither isn’t a nice spell). Poe freaked out thinking that his Dark Power Sysphan was messing with him and started freaking out. This was quite the scene so Marina rushed out and took Poe away from the prying eyes.
Meanwhile Luna was looking for an alternative way to satisfy her near unquenchable appetite. She headed over to the field where the camp raises pigs to slaughter one. Well, killing and butchering a full grown hog is harder than it sounds so Luna’s struggle to do so with a pocket knife attracted Natalie, the woman in charge of raising the pigs. At first Natalie was confused, than disgusted, then astonished that Luna would even try this. She decided she would sit and watch Luna try to butcher the pig and eat it cold, which turned out to be pretty funny. Well Luna became frustrated and decided to go partial wolf, which turned out yo be a bit teen wolfy at this stage. Well this didn’t go exactly as planned, and she smelled something unnatural which pissed her off.
So out in the woods Poe was still convinced Sysphan was messing with him so Marina tried a bit of parlor trick magic to convince him that she had her own power. She managed to conjure the illusion of a flame in her hand, but Sysphan managed to implant his visage in the flame. So Poe was convinced Marina was also being manipulated by the Dark Power so he asked the price for Sysphan to leave Marina alone forever. His price was for Poe to give Sysphan claim on Jessie, to which Poe agreed. Of course this was a verbal contract, so Marina heard the whole exchange.
This is where Luna showed up, but rather than being able to calm herself down and turn back into a human, she went darkest self. Poe used some demonic power to wrestle savage wolf Luna and Marina hit her with a stick so the two could run away. Of course this made Marina a target and she got chomped on the leg which snapped Luna out of it.
Luna and Poe carried Marina to her cabin where she sent Luna away and bandaged up her leg and applied a cure for a werewolf bite (Luna was unsure if her feral side chose to transmit blessing or not). Things were getting heated with Poe offering his shirt for the bandage and while he failed to seduce, Sysphan had his back to still make sexy.
The three met up at the dock for swimming. Poe wanted to check in on Jessie to see what his deal meant. Jessie was there cheering up Sam and dropped the two were family. Jessie seemed normal until they started the sentence ‘The blood of the innocent…’ and Sam finished ‘will make the forest grow.’
He joined up with Marina and Luna who were talking about what happened. Marina interrogated Luna using a ring of truth and went into her darkest self to do so. Luna revealed that it was the sent of Marina’s magic that drew her notice and that the smell was completely unfamiliar to her. Luna tried to make assurances that now that she knew Marina wasn’t in danger. Marina decided to use Luna to find Tanya and told Poe and Luna that Tanya was her coven memeber.
Poe was on board for helping, but they found that everyone one at the waterfront had lined up on the dock and were silently staring at the three. They decided that it was about time to get moving. They rushed to the big house, but a councilor Johana caught them. Luna and Marina were able to use their injuries to create an excuse that they were going to the infirmary. Johana decided to shuffle Poe into the rec hall to do choirs while she took the other two to get treated. The kitchen staff told Poe to sweep up the kitchen, but bolted first chance he had, causing a huge mess and starting a fire.
Luna and Marina were able to lie their way out of the infirmary (but not until she took an overboard dose of codeine 3), and the fire allowed the three to get everybody out of the Big House. Luna tried to pick up a trail but instead passed out and had a vision of Sysphan. The Demon tree told Luna about how Poe gave Jessie to it and offered to share them with Luna. This infuriated her and when she came to, she attacked Poe. Marina decided to discourage the fight by withering Luna. Already being in her darkest self, Luna molted very painfully leaving her completely tender. Luna cool-aide manned out of there.
With no leads on what happened to Tanya, Poe asked Sysphan for another favor, and Sysphan was completely willing to provide a hint for the cost of a fifth string. The demon revealed that Natalie knew exactly what happened to Tanya, and Poe carved the name in the floor so he could sneak out and find somewhere quiet to ride out the withdrawal.
Marina got the message but became more worried about Poe and went to find Luna to get help freeing him from Sysphan. Luna agreed and they tracked Poe to the sand dunes.
Meanwhile, Poe was trying to figure out what Sysphan wanted to get back on their good side. Sysphan was more than happy to ignore the formal summoning process and instead told Poe it wanted a monster’s teeth. The full set. To make it easier it provided a sledge hammer. This was around the time Luna and Marina showed up. Marina blocked the way for Poe so Sysphan commanded him to break her knee. He tried but found he was under a binding making all violence he committed on others bounce off.
Of course that just prevented Sysphan from using Poe to physically harm the others, not other forms of harm. the demon commanded Poe to cut off a pinky which he did so with his teeth. Getting the message, Marina asked what Sysphan wanted, which it responded ‘my forest back’. Not just the camp, but the entire region which was one big forest. Unable to do that, Marina offered to buy Poe out of the contract which the demon agreed. Seeing that we were at a point that playbooks were going to change, and that we were close to the end of the four hour block, I called this end of session.
Overall the play set did exactly what I wanted, create a fast easy way to run a player generated setting with engaged characters within a con slot. There a few things to tweek, but nothing major. At this point I feel things are close to done. I want to thank tom Fendt, Stephanie Strickling, and Tim Koppang for the excellent game.
