We just had our 6th (?) session of our Monsterhearts campaign set at the prestigious serpent-controlled boarding…

We just had our 6th (?) session of our Monsterhearts campaign set at the prestigious serpent-controlled boarding school of Malvern-Chamberlain (Go Crusaders!), in Western Massachusetts. I really need to post all the weekly love letters from this game at some point. Here’s one of my favorites from this past week:

Dear Ms. Zazsu Brightly-Ladon [the Serpentine],

Your family has decided — despite not being like the hippies you were raised by — that it is time to “imminentize the eschaton” so to speak. It is time for the other major players in the game to choose which side they will stand with in the coming time of trial. You and your four cousins (Alistair, Genevieve, George Winston, and T) have each been asked to seduce and/or destroy the following five targets: Tucker [werewolf PC], Mark [infernal PC], Annie [witch PC], Eli [nephalim NPC], and Pastor Helen [Eli’s dark angel mother NPC]. The adults have left it up to you to divide these amongst yourselves while they handle some other matters, but are clearly watching to see which of the younglings handles this business with the most skill. Let’s play out the scene where you pick your targets, yes?

Are you still in your Darkest Self? If so, tell me whose life you have totally destroyed with cold venomous fury. Did you swallow them whole? If so, mark XP.

And, of course, the person that the Serpentine chose to swallow whole, slowly digest, and spit their bones down an old well was the girlfriend of the Infernal. So… awesome?

We have a world-shaking battle looming on the horizon between the spawn of the Dragon (the serpent brood) vs. the maybe-fallen Angel and her halfbreed childe. That will be fun.

So I want to have a game of Monsterhearts.

Unfortunately due to time constraints I don’t have very much time to be able to sit down and have a session weekly. So I’ve come up with an idea.

I want to run a game using just Skype Group chats, not necessarily calls, but typing. We might do calls as we get on or in between. But I feel it’d work as a way to have everything down and still be relatively fast. Usually I’ll utilize message boards or the like though I have yet to find somewhere I can play MH via board. ((If you’ve got one, let me know that too.))

So if you are interested in a MH game on Skype that’ll just continue over a few days, either comment or add me on Skype, my username is Soirgriffe.

The Shield is a tremendously powerful move…it doesn’t seem so, since it doesn’t grow your power by giving you help on stats, but a little string use can turn a potent 8 into an outright failure. Of course, sometimes your gang betrays you and one of them is in a death cult they didn’t tell you about…

No, seriously. With Lyal unable to record this week due to a lost voice (imagine that), we’re bringing you another Idle Red Hands first: an actual play of Joe McDaldno’s Monsterhearts game, which is being MCed for us by Chris. This is actually our third session of the game, though we recap the previous session’s events to bring both our new player, Alan, and our listeners up to speed on what’s happened in the story so far.

As we have a new player joining us (and a few regular players with short memories), we do go over some of the game’s rules and mechanics. Though not in any coherent way. This recording isn’t meant to teach people how to play Monsterhearts; it’s more of an example of what happens during a session of the game. If you’d like to though, you can download the Player Reference Sheet and MC Reference Sheet to follow along with what’s going on behind the scenes.

Here is how i would run my CampMonsterhearts One-Shot:

Playbooks allowed:

All the standard playbooks but the Choosen.

If people are more experienced they can play a Selkie or Serpentine (then their family runs the camp)

All the characters are at a Summercamp. Divide them up into 2-3 cabins where they are staying. Each cabin has 6 people staying in it. (if you have more then 3 players make it 3 cabins with 4 people staying) Keep the ammount of NPCs about the same as there are characters.

Define who is sleeping where (Girls and Boys are sepperated) and name 2 more teenagers that are staying in other cabins.

Ones everyone is named, start asking leading questions about them. A few things i thought off:

To PC A: So NPCA stole your favourite bikini, how did you find this out?

To BC B: so what did you promise NPCA to steal the bikini? Why did you want it?

Who did beat you at the race yesterday? How did you react when they totally rubbed it in your face?

Who did you make out with 2 days ago? (let’s say it was NPCA)

Then ask another character how they felt NPCA! made out with them yesterday?

Kalm is the guy who can get you everything here, booze, weed, condoms, porn-magazines – what was the last thing he got for you?

PCB, you don’t have any phone reception around here, when was the last time you heard from your “girl-/boyfriend” back home?

Who do you always try to impress at the beach/pool? (depending on if there is a Selkie)

What hobby you have always gets made fun of?

Why have you still not done anything against Christyna that bully-bitch?

Where do you sneak to when you want to mastrubate in private?

Some more general questions to establish characters maybe:

What is your favourite music

What is your favourite TV-show

Did you bring your Nintendo DS with you?

Who do you miss most from back home?

Do you have a book with you?

Totally ask about if they are sleeping on the upper or lower bunkbed and how it was decided. Did they beat someone up to get the upper one?

The camp supervisors (or the 2 that are mostly on-camera) are a creepy man-woman twins.

From there i would just start painting typical summer camp scenes. Probarbly starting with 1 cabin and the people there getting the wake-up call. (if there is sleeping around at that stage then there might be a moment here where a boy is at a girl cabin (or the girls in the cabin find 2 of the girls together in bed or something like that. Both can be interesting)

Next scene, people from the other cabin going to dinner. Ask them if they have any duties they need to fulfill.

Introduce some big thing, like a competiotion or a party that night or something like that. Depending on the mood i feel at the table really

Depending on their plans, horrible monsterhearts shenanigans…

The big thing and what happens there. (someone for sure is DEAD!)

The scenes are just a general structure i could use, i will leave a lot of things open for the players to decide.
