When you attempt to alter the dreamscape around you, roll +Manipulate. On a 10+ you make a small change in your immediate area. On a 7-9, the dreamer’s subconcious resists; you either draw attention from his Demons or lessen your connection to the dreamscape.

When you try to understand the symbolism in someone’s dreamscape, roll +Insight. On a 10+ ask 3, on a 7-9 ask 1.

• What does this dream object represent?

• What emotion is this object tied to it?

• How important is this symbol to the dreamer?

• What other symbols are connected to this object?

When you try to damage someone’s Demons, roll +Self. On a 10+, you deal your damage to the Demon and your self-image is not damaged. On a 7-9, you still deal your damage, but the Demon manages to damage or corrupt your self-image.

I’ve been idly considering putting together a “World That Time Forgot” hack of AW, inspired by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Arthur Conan Doyle et al’s pulp fiction of primal lands, savage people and dinosaurs… I figured that it’s at the opposite end of civilisation from AW, and suffers from similar scarcity, savagery, and dangers.

So far I’m just brainstorming a list of potential playbooks, including:

Thunder Hunter – specialises in hunting megafauna.

Beast-Dancer – trains large dangerous pets.

Archer – hunts at a distance, from the shadows.

Shaman – wields spiritual influence.

Chieftain – responsible for the tribe.

Lorekeeper – draws on tribal and ancestral memories.

??? – gathering and scouting.

Warrior – specialised in fighting other people.

Trapper – sets snares, pits, logfalls, builds stuff.

Does this sound like an interesting exercise to anyone else? Can anyone suggest other playbooks that might be interesting, or offer suggestions about the spread I have now?

Super prelim WoD hack I slapped together this afternoon. Have been intrigued the surreality and hyper violence of the video game Hotline Miami. Let me know what you think. Warning, lots of bad language and a generally dark overtone.

How do you like your apocalypse?

How do you like your apocalypse?

How do you like your apocalypse? Where do you find inspiration for the mood and tone you give you your game of Apocalypse World? What’s the visual you go for in your games? Does it change often?

I haven’t had the opportunity to run the game myself, played a few times. My time will come I’m sure. I know I have an healthy love of gonzo and genre-mashing. Luckily, this game lends itself well to both.

I found Apocalypse World in “Swords & Wizardry”.

I found Apocalypse World in “Swords & Wizardry”.

I found Apocalypse World in “Swords & Wizardry”.

What’s Swords and Wizardry? It’s one of the better OSR-style retroclones (in my opinion; but there are better ones).

And here is an excerpt:

Take note: Monsters do not always leap to the attack. Unless they are on the alert for intruders, the Referee may roll 2d6 to determine whether the monsters will attack if they surprise the adventurers. On a roll of 2-6, the monsters will be hostile and attack; on a roll of 7-9, the monsters will withhold judgment and wait to see if the adventurers are hostile; on a roll of 10-12, the monsters will have a positive initial reaction to seeing the adventurers, and might even be convinced to offer some help – if they are well paid, of course!

Sounds familiar, I thought! Cool.

After playing Urban Shadows by Andrew Medeiros, a friend (John Layton)  and I wanted to make an addon that was a few steps closer to WoD.

This is our first draft write up, as you will see not quite complete, but I would love feedback from both WoD fans, US, fans and AW fans.

Had a great moment in the last (3rd) session of our game.

Had a great moment in the last (3rd) session of our game.

Had a great moment in the last (3rd) session of our game. Newly arrived Battlebabe is angling to pick up Amy (an NPC). Aced his Seduce roll, but then the Hardholder intervenes to warn him off. After considering Going Aggro, a Manipulate suffices and the Battlebabe takes XP in return.

First real heat in a PC-NPC-PC triangle.

Afterwards the player mentions that he reckons Magnus is in love with Amy (forbidden fruit an’ all) and that he doesn’t intend to have sex with her, but maybe a custom move would be the trick.

Had a few thoughts and came up with this:

When Amy comes onto Magnus, he rolls+Cool

10+ No worries; you refuse her gallantly – she’s still smitten with you. Take +1 forward

7-9 Pick one:

• You turn her away, but you’re a little bit distracted by thoughts of Amy afterwards. Take -1 forward

• You reject her advances and leave her lying on the bed. Go pick a fight with someone

• You turn the conversation to meaningless trivialities and then head out to deck. Another PC is there, tell them a secret and give each other +1Hx

6- All three above OR You have hot sex with her for most of the night and the neighbours know all about it. You dump Amy the next morning over breakfast, sure it was never anything serious right.

All PCs aboard get +1Hx and Magnus loses this move.

In my game there is a npc “hocus” in my game that preaches peace and freedom.

In my game there is a npc “hocus” in my game that preaches peace and freedom.

In my game there is a npc “hocus” in my game that preaches peace and freedom. Of course my players are totally against being so pacifist if because its stupid in the apocalypse.

Now I want to give this guy Seahorse some mechanical teeth. What I came up with is this:

When you listen to seahorse preach the gm gets 1 hold against you. He can spend this hold to offer you XP to stop from committing an act of violence.

Maybe you also have to act under fire to use violence directly against him as long as he has hold…

What do you think?
