How Interconnected Characters May Reveal the Reality Behind the Stories of Viking Sagas.

The Icelandic sagas of the Norse people are thousand-year-old chronicles of brave deeds and timeless romances, but how true to Viking life were they?

” It is no longer tenable to ignore that occasionally, demonstrably female bodies were laid to rest with weapons and demonstrably male bodies with feminine article such as jewellery.”

Shield maidens were a real thing

Great article and discussion about findings of Viking graves with gender mixed grave goods and the other material and literal sources for the complex gender roles in Viking society

I’m not able to check the book at this time, so I hope this isn’t another case where I post something that was already listed in the bibliography…but I read this book back in grade school, and it’s an excellent example of how Sagas could play out, IMO. The crux of the story is an outlawry dispute resolved by a bowshot contest, and the Althing (as well as the general Icelandic legal system) plays a substantial role in the story. (There’s also a creepy-cool scene in a viking barrow. ^_^ )

It’s a lot more action-y than standard Sagas gameplay, but there’s some really neat Icelandic settlement moments in this volume. Plus: MANGA VIKINGS. (Not sure where the hardcover is, but this is the Kindle edition.)
