Running first session of a new #ApocalypseWorld campaign today, I introduced an NPC named Glider, a dealer of drugs and herbs, spices, perfumes, and such. The PC Hocus chose a “how could I get (new NPC) to join the cult” result from Read A Person. I couldn’t think of what would motivate this character, so I called a quick break and reread the Leap forward with named, human NPCs section in the book.

“Choose a body part — their stomach, gut, dick or clit, their nose, time-ticking womb, their fearful cowardly heart — and have them just follow it around wherever it goes.” I read that and thought, nose? How would someone follow their nose? And then I realized I already had the answer and it was the perfect motivator for this character. He sells perfumes. He lives in a hold and works in a marketplace where he’s surrounded by people with lousy hygiene. He wants to live in an environment where people care about how things smell. And secondarily other aesthetic concerns, how his environment looks, and sounds, sure, but first and foremost Glider cares about smells. So I described how Glider’s booth is set up, with a lot more attention to environment than the other market stalls, and how Glider actually cares about this stuff, and maybe if you wanted him to help make your cult members stink prettier…

That passage gave me exactly the hint I needed to make Glider real.

“In one of the private booths in the back of Wolf’s, there’s a bed built on top of a low cage, where Ula sometimes…

“In one of the private booths in the back of Wolf’s, there’s a bed built on top of a low cage, where Ula sometimes keeps Bad Puppies. Camo’s been a very Bad Puppy.” #ApocalypseWorld

So today I’m mostly editing and expanding Troublemakers (yeah, I know, I’ve got books to finish, but I have to follow my muse) and I’ve got to the bit about creating your character.

Now, it’s an #ApocalypseWorld   hack but as those of you who’ve seen my comments on #TheHood   will know, I absolutely suck at making those little lists of names that reflect the character type for each playbook, so I was just going to throw in a line like “choose the name you like” and move on.

Then the little devil on my left shoulder chimed in: “You know, kids don’t choose their names, their parents do: when everyone is sitting around creating characters, why not get the other players to choose the given name for each PC?” Meanwhile, the little devil on my right shoulder was off knocking back tequila shooters in a bar in Soho, so I thought I’d calibrate my moral compass with the rest of you.

How would you feel if your character’s given name was picked by the other players in your game? You would still get to choose their nickname or common name, but their given name would be whatever their ‘parents’ had decided.

1.) Yes and no — It can cease to be a gang, and in that manner become an ex-parrot.. er.. non-existent entity.

a.) staying alive is… staying alive… that is, continuing to exist with the directed purpose ascribable to any entity:-however, every couple harm that the gang soaks, counts as a couple fatalities (separate from injuries) that an angel is likely to pronounce D.O.A. (CHOPPERS -> ADDITIONAL RULES -> GANGS & HARM)

b.) By disbanding — not ‘holding up’ under pressure, or in the absence of a leader at a critical moment, due to very bad management from the pack alpha, or simply because the rationale for banding together has passed and everyone is ready to divide the crew shares.

2.) If an infirmary is being used by someone with the appropriate move — the rules for healing one individual, or many sick, wounded, or dying souls, are the same. Triage (the assignment of degrees of urgency to wounds or illnesses to decide the order of treatment of a large number of patients or casualties.) seems to be presumed in the Infirmary, Battlefield Grace, and Touched by Death, but not in more intimate moves such as Healing Touch and Professional Compassion. (ANGEL:- ADDITIONAL RULES ~> INFIRMARY ~; ANGEL MOVES:- ~> Professional Compassion, Battlefield Grace, Healing Touch, Touched by Death.)

There is no reason not to allow a gang to heal (or fail harm rolls) as a single entity, normally — to simplify book keeping, and to keep the gang’s membership fresh. These are just extra mouths to feed, occasionally useful as meat-shields… right?

ADDENDUM:

Since Triage Protocol seems to be a presumed part of the Angel’s repertoire, this also supports the notion that a fatality in a gang… is a fatality before the angel assigns order of treatments, and no matter how long they might remain conscious… they are counted among the lost that no miracle can dissuade.

I would not count such Fatalities as being part of the sick and wounded that die under an angel’s care, for purposes of the Touched by Death move. These are, by all rights, dead before care is assigned.

So, since it seems like the thing to do, I’ve come up with my own Powered by the Apocalypse hack, and it’s officially in Beta.

In the tradition of games like #ApocalypseWorld   and #DungeonWorld  , and hacks like Sixth World, Western World, and Zombie World.

I think it’s a game you’re gonna want.

A game you’ll really REALLY want.

Check it out!

It’s ready!

Impulse Drive is now in alpha testing! The following link has the rules and printouts necessary to play a game of misfits and spaceships and insurmountable debt using the PBTA engine.

I’ll be running playtest games over hangouts, skype, and/or roll20 over the next few weeks, and I invite others to run games themselves. These rules are free to distribute and play. If you have any questions about the rules, feel free to contact me and I’ll try to answer them as promptly as I can.

So now that #DreamAskew has got me thinking about it, I’m really into this idea of Playbook Principles. If they were a part of #ApocalypseWorld, or a Hack, what do you think they would they be for each Playbook?
