So I have a setting for a PbtA hack I’m working on (World of the Awakened), something I’ve been working on for the better part of a year. I have never done one before so please be gentle haha. In reality, if it’s constructive, I’ll take any criticism. I’ll summarize it here, so please let me know if you guys think it’s worth writing something about.

Summary:

Thousands of years ago, Earth was visited by three species from outer space: the Helians, the Acaplians and the Kyrrlyks). They wanted Earth’s abundant resources, so like every race they started a to wage war for them. The worlds native inhabitants, the humans were caught in the cross fire of this war. Forced to work for the other species, killed for sport and even used for experiments, the humans were at the brink of extinction.

One day, the Helians (those who experimented on them), found something interesting hidden inside the human genetic code. They found the solution to the war, once they activated the gene humans gained otherworldly abilities. These humans rebelled against their invaders and ended the war, but at high cost. The world lies in ruins, broken and battered because of the war.

Now, hundreds of years later, comes the story of the new ‘Awakened’. Will they defend the world? Has the threat of the war really been vanquished? Or are they lying in wait until the can strike again.

Again, sorry for the long post, but that’s the best I could do to summarize it.

So, I’ve been writing a manga/anime PbtA hack for a couple of months now and I am in need of some guidance about playbooks. I don’t want to create straight up playbooks, but leave the creation of the characters dependent on the setting and genre (aspect that’s really important in both manga and anime) of the game.

My question is this: What do you guys suggest about this part of the character creation portion? Do you think a universal template would work, or something more specific?

I thought about the MC and players working together to come up with a limited number of custom moves for the character; or maybe letting them create their character and just use the basic/special moves (those have been written) for guidance in the game. They basically are able to do whatever their character can do within their stipulated abilities.

Any suggestion is appreciated! Thanks!

Evening,

Just finished my one shot and it was great. They loved it but because we ran out of time we couldn’t finish it up. Doing a one shot with this game was harder than I thought, I’m not gonna lie, but I still did it anyway.

Part 1

Backstory: I had 4 players; a Dragon, an Immortal, a King and a Wolf. They worked for a clandestine group employed by the government to deal with supernatural cases. The government doesn’t officially acknowledge these supernatural events but has their hands in their dealings.

The players were tasked to venture to this small rural town in the United States to investigate a set of child disappearances. The children would mostly come back after weeks or months at a time. The most recent child said he venture to a church but does not remember what happened after that. Also, in his dreams he would see this dark shadowy demon with deep red eyes talking to him.

Part 2

Game: The players investigated the church at night, three from the front and one from the back. The three (Dragon, Wolf, King) opened the front door only to find out that it was all pitch black. The one going through the back (Immortal) went in through the back into a room that appeared to be kept tidy and neat; unlike the actual church.

The first group stepped inside the church and passed the doorway when all the lights inside the church (torches on the walls) lit up. The Wolf decided to separate and head forward through the side. He encountered the demon first and learned that the demon wanted them to be gone. The other two kept walking down the middle aisle toward the altar. At the altar was an inverted cross. which they walked towards. When they got there all the torches were blown out and the candles in the altar were lit. The red-eyed demon appeared before them and told them that to look into the child disappearances they should talk to the sheriff.

On the other hand, the Immortal went in through the back of the church inspecting a small cabin like room he had entered into. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary so he kept going forward through another door into a small hallway. He passed the hallway, which led into the big open space of the church where the altar is. At this point he came in to find out that the altar was not lit and only the Wolf was there. While they talked with each other the red-eyed demon appeared before them. He told them that his brother had trapped him inside the church so he could not interfere with his plans. When they finished the conversation, the church went quiet again and both parties appeared next to each other.

After the conversation they went to the police station to talk to the sheriff (they deduced that he was the brother of the demon). This was where we stopped because we didn’t have time to continue the session (had gone for about 4 hours).

Part 3

If we had continued, they would have fought the sheriff and after defeating him they would’ve learned that the he was stealing the town children’s innocence to feed his hunger. Also, as a shocker the townspeople would’ve sided with the sheriff because they had been worshipers of him for generations; and they were, willingly, giving their children to the demon, not the other way around.

End

What do you guys think?
