From Drawing Heat The Hard Way: How Wrestling Really Works by Larry Matysik, who was involved with booking St Louis in the 70s and worked with Vince in the 80s – it’s a great read with lots of good food for thought for the game overall, and for booking individual games.

I’ve been running a playtest game focusing on putting some of the S2 material through it’s paces, and it’s coming together nicely!

Matthew Caulder is playing Curtis Jackson, the Ace (#2timechamp)

Jason Cox is playing Acero, the Luchador (and papa of La Familia)

Joe Zantek is playing Bella “The Beast” Bardot, the Shoot Fighter

Justin Hunt is playing Marc Garner, The Young Boy

Our promotion is Global Elite Pro, a “best of the best” style Japanese outfit with a permanent home base, the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. With an ambitious (though trustworthy) management team, the company is attempting to rapidly establish itself on the global stage. Unfortunately, this means that it’s in debt and overextended. Led by Curtis Jackson’s example, the roster has created a buzzworthy strong social media presence and Bella Bardot in particular has captured the local crowd, drawing a devoted following to the arena. Unfortunately, the GEP original international cable deal has fallen through and potential advertisers still aren’t sold on the concept – will Global Elite Pro pivot to focus on the local crowd, or can it really fulfill the dream of a international Best In Sport long-running professional wrestling showcase?

(bold = tags and troubles)

Plotwise, we’ve seen:

– Curtis Jackson, the highest-profile get for the new promotion, struggle to remain on top despite holding 2 world titles from previous companies and all the goodwill in the world

– Acero work every angle he can to become the power broker of the company through his faction, La Familia, while fending off other high flying challengers

– Bella Bardot turn from MMA-standout babyface to joining Acero’s La Familia faction after a facefull of asian mist from Yoshi Togo, the trainer of the Young Boys. Now unleashed, the Beast is legitimately the hottest act on the card

– Marc Garner grow from “guy wearing a cowboy hat” to having real impact on the quest for the championships, including his discovery that twitching the curtain on what’s going on backstage gets more eyes on him every time

Despite some missteps in my handling of the card at times (game-running stuff, not rules-stuff), the game has been fun and very, very helpful for ironing out kinks in these Gimmicks and some of the new match stipulations and Audience Moves, in particular. Unfortunately, nobody’s rolled a natural 12 for a Mythic Moment yet!

Anyway. Many thanks to these gentlemen for their help in tightening up rules, all while being so fun to play with. We still have some episodes to go (we just established the contenders for the first-ever Global Elite Pro Championships), but I wanted to mark (a) what I’m actually getting to playtest on my end and (b) that there’s progress on the new rules, even while I haven’t been posting much!

Attended the evening NXT show in Chicago last night, along with Justin Phillips who made quite the trek up to get here!

The in-ring action was great (shocking, I know), but as a critical observer I was most struck by how well-balanced and structured the show was. Indie shows, by contrast, tend to be disjoined and built around each individual match trying to outshine everything else; this show had an overall build to it, from the purpose of each match to it’s position on the card to the fact (as a small example) there were no false finishes at all until the first “big” match (Ciampa vs. Zane, which was by far my match of the night).

Unfortunately the venue was terrible (TERRIBLE) and a lot of the crowd around me was very into garbage racist chants, so that impacted my experience pretty strongly. But hey, now I’ve seen NXT live, at least!

A great image, and food for thought: how many Gimmicks can a wrestler go through in their career?

The USPS is raising international shipping rates sharply in February. By the time books are printed and ready to mail, it’s gonna cost over $20 US for me to ship a book outside of North America. That’s more than the retail cost of the book!

I love love love non-US fans and gamers and don’t want to shut people out due to these crazy shipping costs. While I investigate some options, I figured I’d throw it out to you folks for suggestions – anyone (in Europe and the UK, in particular) have experience or leads on people or services who can take in cases of books and break them into individual shipments at domestic postal rates?

We had a houseguest over the weekend who was hanging out while I had TLC on. She had many questions that generally boiled down to “if the point of the match is to win, why do they not try to win when they can?”

It’s a hard question to answer without trying to explain all of wrestling, at least to me! Especially with all the gimmick matches, which are even more about the middle of the match than normal.

The best I could come up with (afterwards, of course) was “the same reason that people in musicals have to sing about everything instead of just say what they mean.”

How do you answer this question?

Exclusively for #Epimas, I’ve written a stand-alone GMless implementation of WWWRPG called New Years Fray.

Can Old Saint Nick handle the Slay Belles?! Will Jack Frost finally prevail over Good Will?! Can the Nutcracker overcome the blinding light of Sol Invictus?!

This is a custom scenario wherein 6 holiday-themed Champions professionally wrestle each other to determine the new Holiday Spirit for the coming year. It’s played “straight” (no kayfabe or booking here!) with a twist on the core WWWRPG match mechanics to make matches more tactically complex and enable competitive finishes.

Epimas is a end-of-year indie game bundle promotion wherein you buy a discounted bundle of games for a friend, and get that same bundle yourself! Details: http://www.worldswithoutmaster.com/epimas/

New Years Fray is in the Corporal Prancer bundle: http://www.worldswithoutmaster.com/epimas-bundles/corporal-prancer with 4 other games including the fantastic Swords Without Master by Epiclaus himself, Epidiah Ravachol.

Give the gift of game!

(features 6 portraits of the wrestlers Champions of Cheer by WWWRPG cover artist Eric Quigley. Also, many thanks to folks who contributed holiday puns that ended up making their way into the game: Isaac Sher, Rebel Wulf, Amy Goldstraw, Aaron Griffin, Sean Walsh, Chad Bothwick, Justin Hunt )

SPOILER ALERT, CHIKARA FANS

SPOILER ALERT, CHIKARA FANS

SPOILER ALERT, CHIKARA FANS

But this is a great interview with the new Grand Champion of Chikara, KimberLee!

I’m gonna watch the event (Top Banana – http://chikarapro.com/events/season-15/12-05-2015_top-banana) this weekend, but I’ve heard it was great – and my twitter BLEW UP with this news, which was also great.

It was after the fact, when one of my trainers, Drew Gulak, pointed out to me that there has never been a woman champion of a wrestling company that’s not a women’s company – ever. Once he said that, I was stunned. I hadn’t thought that big. There’s a lot of weight that comes with it. I have to prove that I deserve to be that first woman and that I deserve to be a woman that represents a whole company: women, men, ants and ice cream cones alike.

Like all things, Chikara doesn’t always go the direction I’d like to see, but I do think that overall they’re still one of the most progressive companies in professional wrestling in a lot of ways, and this means a lot!
