So I just made a super long rambley post in the PbtA community (https://plus.google.com/106250715432834907059/posts/KqfgrJMuvSJ) detailing the Love Letters I wrote to my players since we were nearing the end of the first season.
The short version is, I took a page from The Extraordinary Adventures of Baron Munchausen (and excellent Story RPG from the 1790s!) and wrote each character story seed (well three versions really using the 10+/7-9/6- format). I asked them each to read the seeds, roll, and then tell a 5-10 minute story. I promised to interrupt occasionally with complications or clarifications and if their story was to my satisfaction (and they incorporated my changes) I gave them an XP.
None of the stories had mechanical effects (well, except for the Infernals) but it gave everyone a nice solid bit of spotlight. Also since 2 of the PCs were in the hospital and the Ghoul was stalking one of the Doctors, I printed the Love Letters on “patient sheets” and came out wearing a labcoat with the Doc’s badge. It’s not often the MC gets to dress up to be IC!
