This is a WIP shot of the “Hunter’s Kit” I’m making for the #Gateway2013  Monster of the Week con game I’m running. It’s all the Basic Moves compressed onto 20 business-sized cards inside a hinged aluminium case. I had to slightly reword a few of the Moves to get them to fit on a business card, and others had to be spread across multiple cards (Use Magic takes up five cards alone between the Move, the effects, the glitches, and the optional Keeper requirements). There’s also a card about Harm, a card about Healing, and a card about Luck. The only Move that didn’t make it in there was Big Magic, as I doubt that will be used in a con game. I still have room for about 5 more cards in the case, so it might make it in, just to be complete.

I still need to print up a clear sticker for the front of the case. It’s going to say “Monster of the Week – Hunter’s Kit” in the distressed MotW typeface, and possibly have graphics to make it look bloody/dented with a bullet hole and claw marks. You know, like it’s actually seen some use. 😉

  1. Very nice prop, I love it.

But I think it can’t be made in french, translation from english being so much verbose than english version 🙁

By the way, where did you find aluminium cases?

  2. Thanks guys. The MotW Basic Moves are surprisingly compact. I’m trying to do the same thing with #DungeonWorld, and the Basic/Special Moves are a lot wordier. I’m liking how there’s a nice amount of white space on these cards.

I was lucky enough to find the cases in the stationary section of a furniture/home goods store here in Japan called MUJI. Their stuff is decent quality and fairly cheap. Each case cost just under ¥400. They also had stainless steel cases of the same style, but those were a bit more than I wanted to spend on con game giveaways. Especially considering the other work involved in making a set.

  3. Update: I printed out the labels for the cases last night. I couldn’t find any clear pre-cut labels, so I just used a single A4 sheet and will have to cut them by hand. I made them all rectangles of the same size, so it hopefully won’t be too much of a hassle.

After letting the labels dry overnight, I cut a set out and applied it to my test case. The front says “Hunter’s Kit” and the inside cover says “Monster of the Week” with a link to the Generic Games website. They came out OK, but the backs of the labels are really sticky. Once you start putting one down you’re committed. I got several small air bubbles under the labels, unfortunately. They still look decent, but I’m going to have to be more careful with the “real” ones.

I did find out the hard way that the ink isn’t totally smudge-proof. While trying to smooth out some of the bubbles I noticed my fingers making some streaks. I was pressing pretty hard, but it was still disappointing. Again, they’re not that bad, but I was worried about the text scratching off or smudging too easily. I had a strike of inspiration and grabbed a can of my “Mr. Hobby Clear Flat” sealer.

The good news is that the sealer completely stops the ink on the labels from smearing and helps seal down the edges of the sticker. The bad news is that the sealer is very tacky and takes a while to dry. I got fingerprints on the inside of the  case when I picked it up, and a big chunk of sealer peeled right off of the front corner. That’s because I stupidly flipped the case over so I could spray the inside before the front was totally dry. As usual, I’ll have to be more careful with the “real” cases and allow for more time between each step so things can dry/set properly. Still, I’m pretty pleased with how they’re turning out.
