Just Heroes: Redrawn
I’ve come up with a much revised version of my superhero hack, taking on board feedback from playtesters and my own reservations about the game as it stood. I’m still not sure if this is the way forward or whether the separate Origin and _Style_ playsheets are the way to go, but I’m leaning towards the one-sheet version as it allows for faster character creation.
Hi James, IMO you’ve had a great idea, considering that superheroes are my favourite rpg genre 😉
About playbooks I would have preferred to see not the battlenames of every home-made supers but more generic and probably well-known superheroes’ archetypes (i.e., speedster, brick, dark avenger/vigilante, gadgeteer, paragon, and so on): they are more easier to catch and understand at a glance than not memorizing the characteristics of every named superheroes during the creation phase. Again, my personal opinion, obviously 🙂
And what about archenemies, thugs, supervehicles, super-headquarters, etc.? Have you planned to write anything about them or not?
There is certainly more to be said about villains and threats in general; the last part of the MC guidance section barely scratches the surface and doesn’t deal with Fronts or their equivalent at all. Perhaps once I’ve had a chance to playtest it myself, I’ll be able to marshal my thoughts on this, but I might just tap the brains of those who nobly playtested it in its previous form.
The playbook names are still a holdover from the previous version, where you put two sheets side by side to form your hero’s name and other details; I might well change them if players stumble over them. Also, at least one of the playbooks has changed quite a bit since being given its name, so a change is in order anyway.
I really hope you keep the separate playsheet feature, because I think it’s very cool, and it fits the superhero genre perfectly!
The Paragon’s playbook is well done 🙂 On the other hand, doing in this way, you don’t risk any copyright infringement.
