AW + GoT

AW + GoT

AW + GoT

I’m sure that others have noticed this already, but since I can’t find anything posted about it, I have to say: Apocalypse World would be the PERFECT system for the Game of Thrones setting.

Things are hard, people are ugly, those who aren’t ugly f#ck like rabbits.

Also consider these examples of characters to playbooks:

Jamie Lannister=Battlebabe

Talisa Stark: Angel

Tyrion Lannister: Chopper

Kahl Drogo: Driver

The Hound: Gun Lugger

Ned Stark: Hardholder

Melisandre: Hocus

Petyr Baelish: Operator

Gendry: Savvyhead

Cersei Lannister:  Skinner

So…who’s gonna rewrite the first playbook?

  1. Drogo is a Chopper, his gang just happens to be mounted on horseback.

Interestingly, AW can be straight-up converted to a Western, too. It works slightly better since you just need to change the guns instead of replacing guns with swords/spears/etc,

  2. Mikael Andersson has taken over the GoT hack I wrote, at least for the time being. He’s got some mind-blowing updates to the game that he may be willing to share with you. 🙂

  3. My gut says it could work for the feel, but not the scope. There are so many major characters, spread pretty widely geographically, that it could be hard to maintain the focus and spotlighting that AW requires.

My ideal hack would involve simple, Black Stars Rise esque archetypes for characters; a nice subsystem for creating n different locations + situations; each player having 1 character per starting location; a way to web together most/all of the characters; aggressive cutting and scene framing; and more social, familial, and wide-ranging/reaching moves / subsystems.

But, until I have time to make and test it, it’ll sit on my back back burner. That said, if you want to simply duplicate the surface feel and don’t mind a tighter scope, an AW reskin will work okay. 🙂

  4. Alexander Davis, you’re dead-on about the scope being a problem. The hack I made of Andrew Medeiros’ hack features trouple-style play in order to try to address that issue, with each player an MC in charge of one distinct area of the world, and three “tiers” of player characters – protagonists, support, and extras.

Todd Nicholas, I’ve been wanting to take a look at SCUP for a long time! If you’d be willing to share it with me, I’m at lachek@gmail.com. Thanks!!

  5. Todd Nicholas Mikael Andersson, I would love to see what you guys have already.

A reskin seemed like the best/easiest solution at first but I can totally see what you guys are saying about the scope.

I like the idea of a game session covering what could equate to a chapter in the book. Focused on one characters point of view with other characters sometimes passing through/opposing/helping. And maybe each player has “backup” characters spread out through the realm.

Once someone needs a play tester, I’m there. Thanks for the discussion guys.

  6. Oh, and Andrew- I’m fairly certain that Joe (Beason) will be at Dreamnation, but I definitely won’t be (baby on the way + midterms = Todd is staying put for the foreseeable future!).
