How do you guys handle debts in the fiction?

Do you write down for each debt what it is owed for? If yes, do you integrate this into the fiction each time a debt is cashed in?

Or are debts, once taken, just a mechanical currency that is simply counted and spent for a mechanical effect?

My guess is: Somewhere in between both extremes. But what should I aim for when playing the game for the first time?

  1. Markus Schoenlau, from the games I have ran it is in between. I can see where MC’s could make it just a mechanical currency, but I make it count. I make it affect the world around the players.

  2. When you cash in a Debt, you need to remind them why they owe you. If you’ve forgotten the specific details, you can always go with something like “Hey, you owe me! I’ve been there for you in the past.” If you can point to specific events instead, that’s even better.

But we know that after a few weeks players can forget these details. I’ve seen many players really keep track of their Debts by adding in point form notes on where they came from, which is cool.
