Tim Franzke, I saw a few people talking about how to get XP (I am assuming AW new players,) curious on your opinion if you preferred the AW method of highlighted stats, the DW method or the AW:Dark Ages method? I am guessing US though in it’s final stages isn’t 100% designed, so this mechanic could possibly be affected.

I added the AW:DA method quite easily into my game of US, I have quite enjoyed it.

“Mark experience by filling in one of the little experience bubbles on your character sheet when you use any basic, faction/rapport, corruption, debt or archetype/add-on move with that move counting only 1 time towards XP during that advancement.

When you gain 6 experience, then advance and erase your marks.

There are two exceptions to this rule: the moves Spellcasting and the move Fae Magic. You do not receive experience when you use those particular moves, but will gain XP each new spell or faerie power you use.

Certain moves / traits designate additional experience when activated, giving direction on how and when such experience is gained.”

  1. You have characters you have a special relationship with. When you make a move at them you mark 1. You can only mark each relationship once. When you have 5(?) marks you get an advance.

It works more or less like that, writing from memory here.

It enforces players having scenes together and to lean heavily on the relationships. It might not be the best model for US though, now that I think about it.

  2. DA Rocks, and makes you diversify. You just need to figure out what to give marks too. So probably not for your weapons. But the wolf transformation? Does that give you a mark or not?

    It’s a bit tricky

  3. Tim Franzke, but you are correct. Moves like transformation would probably get XP, while a Hunter’s weapons would not until they used Unleash or Threaten.

I was 50/50 on spell casting and fairie magic. They are moves with consequences, but most of the time as a Spell Caster ….. your entire set of moves revolves around the Spells.

  4. Tim Franzke That is what I did, since i was running the Mage add-on as well. No marks for spell casting, but marks for spells. I felt giving both would be double-dipping.

  5. Could someone post a quick summary of the Xp system or a link to one for AW:DARK AGE, tried to find one to see if I will use it for a upcoming urban shadows game I’m running.

  6. Read what I wrote above in quotes, that is pretty much the DA system reworked for US. You get XP each time you use a new move, but you only get it once that level. What it does is create diversity of moves amongst players.

So say you need 6/7 xp to advance. That’s 7 basic moves, 2 rapport moves, 1 for debt and starting with say 2 class moves. So that is 12 ways to get xp before even your first advancement.

  7. Tim Franzke Hahaha!

In the endless quest to make the pace of leveling up reliable but variable, and to make it depend upon reliable but variable action, you naturally try as many different things as you think might work.

  8. Well Vincent Baker, You are a then, even more of a genius if this was just a Random “different way” because so far it has gotten a lot of praise.
