Apocalypse World Dark Age Question

Apocalypse World Dark Age Question

So when someone or something denies you your rights

Can you deny yourself one of your rights and then have to figure out how you deal with that?

Potentially this could happen when 1 right of yours is in direct confrontation with another right you have.

I could see this happen when you have met someone that is exhilerating, intoxicating and you have to give them a boon that forces you to not use your right. You are denying it yourself because you have other things to do.

  1. Also, if you choose not to exert a right, you are waiving it, so it’s OK. No move triggered. The only occasion I can think of that would get you in such a bind is, as you correctly say, if one of your rights contradicts another in a pretty direct way… In this way, maybe you could actually deny your own right! What happens, then?

    Well, follow the move.

You can accept the dishonor with dignity, or bemoan your fate. These work in the same way. You can ask yourself to do something else instead – but you may not be allowed to, so you’d have to turn down your own demand. You can tell yourself that if you go through with this, you’re gonna pay… Which is actually a bit silly. Or you can declare that your Gods are outraged, and they would be outraged against you. Awesome!

  2. As I read the choices, it looks like denying yourself your right (waiving it, or not exerting it) is not intended to trigger the move.

I think it should be this way : there are many times where you could exert a right, but choose not to due to other circumstances (including but not limited to exerting another of your rights). If you have a right to speak wisdom in counsel and to slay who you must, you don’t deny yourself your right when you decide (say) to convince everyone to banish a member you deem dangerous from the council instead of killing them (or vice-versa).

  3. YES! TRIGGER THE MOVE!  BEMOAN YOUR FATE! HAVE THE GODS CURSE YOUR SITUATION! TELL THE WORLD YOU HAVE BEEN WRONGED AND THAT THE FATES MALIGN THEMSELVES AGAINST YOU!

  4. Brian Poe, this absolutely works!

When following the move in this conversational context, Alberto Muti, it seems your introspection would follow in the darkness of Prince Hamlet and the insanity of Sorceress Mim… converse with yourself, and assert your own tyranny over your weak willed and sniveling inner child. Bring the myriad of your personalities to bear on your situation, and provide yourself no quarter… deny your preferred right, and insist that you must act against your personal desire, honor, or reason. Or divide and conquer your own congress, and let your inner choir of voices manifest their lamentations of the vile tyrant you have become. Then offer yourself the question; to remain tormented in temporal manifestation, or reject self sovereign privy for individual continuity of state.

To be, or not to be… that is the question; whether tis more sane of mind and stout of heart to openly behave in accordance with the cardinal path of chosen flight, or remain flighty even in the face of one’s own obfuscated directional solitude.
