A magical girls themed Apocalypse World hack.

A magical girls themed Apocalypse World hack.

A magical girls themed Apocalypse World hack. Made for stuff like Kiki’s Delivery Service, Serenity Rose, and Cardcaptor Sakura. The slice of life fantasy mysteries/horror, rather than the tokusatsu superhero shenanigans. I’m going to be running this starting January.

Originally I was going to use Fate for this game, but last night I decided that a light Apocalypse World hack would be a better fit.

  1. (reads) (blinks) (reads again) (squees like a cheerleader and does the happy panda dance of imminent player doom)  AW is not generic and universal, but darn if it doesn’t seem flexible enough to fit a lot of diverse stuff!

(And as a side thought, have you seen Ewen Cluney’s Dragon World?  That’s Slayers and Dragon Half, AW style!)

  2. I have! It is one of my favorite games that I haven’t gotten to play yet.

    One day.

Aaanyway, talking about the moves: since this is a shoujo  inspired game I wanted a set of moves to navigate relationships. That’s Connect with Somebody and Shut Somebody Down. The Rituals move is kind of a distillation of my own conception of magic, having grown up in a Wiccan household. Act Despite Danger is there for the characters to deal with the dangers that they are going to get into as they investigate the weird mysteries of their town.

I copied the options for Act Despite Danger from Monsterhearts. But the way Strings work in this hack changes the nature of the “scariest person gets a string on you” option in a way that I think I like. Monsters can be connected with, and aren’t ever as monstrous as they first appear.

  3. I passed it to my tabletop group as an option for those Friday nights when we’re all too dragged out from work to want serious content ’round the table.  And I get dibs on the Half-Dragon.  (ahem)  Anyway, from what I can tell, you’ve done a pretty neat job with this.  I’ll have to give it a try when schedule permits…

    No. Never.

If you really want to play Madoka, then you might want to start with Monsterhearts, make everybody either an Infernal or a Mortal, and work from there.
