A fan who runs a bunch of WWW sent me his home games custom Gimmicks. There’s a ton of stuff in here! Some of them are very clearly about emulating a specific wrestler. It’s going to take a while for me to really look through everything but y’all may be interested in browsing (for ideas, or to snag one for your own game!)

  1. There are a few interesting moves in here, but a lot of it is broken.

The Catch wrestler has the nasty downside of losing all momentum on an loss if he loses due to an injury. So a heel can spend 2 momentum to hit’em in the leg with a tire iron and take away the Catch’s 10+ momentum.

The Southerner starting with +2 Look add one means they’ll only botch  a promo <10% of the time, and only if they don't spend momentum).

The Hoss’s Immovable Object is passive which makes it hard to activate. HOSS FIGHT is cool, but UNSTOPPABLE FORCE means that  a feud won’t end until you win.

    Indie darling is interesting.

Joshi is also neat in that the moves encourage a certain playstyle.

The Strong Style’s sensibility seems unlikely to trigger. Every game I’ve seen has control of the match go back and forth pretty often, simply because one person can’t think up an entire wrestling match on the fly, or it’s rude not to take turns. And a no-momentum roll where you can get injured sucks.

Also, “Use Work instead of Real to Work Real Stiff” is pointless for a skin that starts w/ +1 Real.

Man of 1000 masks is basically the High Flyer with 1 or 2 moves changed.

The Mechanic has some bogus moves and “Five Moves of Doom” would only work against NPWs, since an opponent can spend 1 momentum and gain control midway through.

The Brock skin seems okay but “Evolving Before Our Eyes” seems like “Student of the Game”, but better.

  2. The Wild Man is the Hardcore w/ some moves changed. The Backyarder is interesting but has a lot of stat replacement and can start with +3 Real.

Backstage Brawler is a great move because it encourages a certain type of behavior, and with someone who Works Real Stiff Backstage, it can lead to kayfabe blurring drama. Nice.

Honestly, I think the problem was ambition rather than skill. It took multiple revisions just to make TWO skins with twelve moves, and this guy made 12 skins! Although they all have the same injury move.

  3. I think his players get excited about an idea and he or they whip up a new Gimmick rather than modify the existing ones or make individual custom Moves. And I think it’s a pretty big crew, so they “ran out” of the core Gimmicks. Which is fine! No value judgement from me about these, and I think you can see the joy in each one even if the Moves aren’t completely revelatory.

  4. Running out of core gimmicks in an IRL game?  I wish I knew that many wrestling fans!

There were some interesting design decisions that seem to raise the risk/reward ratio.  Many of the botches are lose an audience or take an injury, while every finishing move success grants an audience to both characters.

Who is the mystery Creative?  Come to the Community and tell us how these gimmicks play.

I’m still curious why the veteran and advanced roles are banned.

  5. Under advancement on every gimmick it mentions cannot take Veteran and cannot take advanced role.  Perhaps it’s a copy and paste thing, like the Injury.  I’m just curious.

  6. Hello,

Thank you to Nathan for making the game and being kind enough to ask me to stop lurking and join the community.  I am the author of these first draft skins.  It is true I do have a big group, 7 permanent members & another 7 who float in and out.  There was a large call for new skins.  I’m sure there are plenty of broken things in the builds as well as errors like the ‘banned’ on the advancements.  I really appreciate the feedback, so thank you, and any additional directions or ideas would be really helpful.  We play once a month, two shows, with normally, including myself, 10 players.  It is sort of a wild affair.  We also play with little to no breaking of KAYFABE.  The vibe is very much in the vein of PWG & Chikara.

As for knowing Wrestling Fans and networking we have a Facebook group; The League Of Extraordinary Wrestling Gentlemen.  There we share info, meet up for shows, have a wrestling Podcast (Heel Turn Radio), and generally just enjoy Wrestling.  If you can find it on Facebook just contact me and I’ll invite you.

    Thanks again,

    B. Maier

  7. Welcome!  I can tell a lot of effort went into these and I love the names of the moves.  I have so many questions

Are you exclusively using these skin or do you have players using the skins from the base game?

Many of your moves have injury on a botch.  Do you find injuries happen a lot?  How do you find this playing?

You’re finishing moves are giving 2 audience on a success.  How often is the audience resetting for your group?

  8. Thanks!

We use both the skins from the game proper and the ones that I whipped together.  With so many players and so many N.P.W.’s injuries give us an ability to bring new characters in and shuffle other out, plus it adds some stakes to some of the feuds.  Audience reset happens a lot since we do have some players who understand how to ‘work’ the Apocalypse World engine.  Not to mention the players like things to be sort of over the top all the time.  Hope this answered any questions.
