MAJOR SPOILERS FOR JURASSIC WORLD!

MAJOR SPOILERS FOR JURASSIC WORLD!

MAJOR SPOILERS FOR JURASSIC WORLD!

So the wife and I went to see Jurassic World today. Throughout the movie I kept seeing it as a game of DW/WiP (also Cortex+, but that’s not relevant here).

When the kids try to attack the raptor with the taser and it only knocks it back temporarily I saw that as rolling 7-9 to avoid danger. I saw a lot of the “success with a price or drawback” at various moments.

At the end when Claire whips out the flair to summon Rexie, I was in awe. I was thinking that she was performing a Move that was a lot like burning a bond, but not quite. They unleashed the previously most-feared dinosaur. Claire held the flare and stood like a priestess providing an offering. At the end of the adventure Rexie took her price as she stood as the uncontested ruler of the island.

What existing move would best represent that scenario? Where you openly beg the aid of your bitterest foe to defeat a stronger enemy, and at the cost of giving in to your rival’s demands.

  1. Paul Beakley has a great write-up with some cool moves for Jurassic World if you’re interested:

I tend to see most movies in the context of the AW engine these days (like Mad Max in particular). I’d almost definitely write a custom move for that situation, it’s too cool not to, but it might fit ok into a Seize Control move, with control of the park being what’s contested (and obviously they only get a 7-9 and choose to not end up harm’s way since control of the park is definitely seized by the T-Rex). Still, there’s a lot that goes on and it wouldn’t be nearly as satisfying as writing up something custom (it’s not something that would happen often I imagine!).
