I have a question about if a power can create an advantage which gives the character a new or different “use” until the advantage is destroyed?

I was creating a character and one of his abilities is to manipulate matter in a way similar to transformers. He is an alien living computer construct and lets say he touches a tank I would like him to transform the tank into a suit of armor with a big ass gun. The benefits of the armor and the gun would be advantages gained.

  1. Sure, I don’t think it would matter too much whether you indicated it was an Advantage or not as long as the EIC (and you) knew how your character’s powers worked. Whether the Invisible Woman conjures up a force field to absorb the impact of a missile, or conjures up a shield capable of withstanding [1] Condition doesn’t really matter to you as a player, it’d only really matter in a PVP conflict (if it did come to that, I wouldn’t allow generating Advantages and assigning benefits like absorbing Conditions and such – I’d let the rolls do the work).

The EIC works with the fiction and takes into account the powers of the players, so when the Invisible Woman defies danger, they might narrate her doing it by using some force fields to do so. When the Invisible Woman goes to Take Down Doctor Doom by shooting a series of invisible spikes at him, success (and level of success) is determined by the dice, not by how the powers are defined. Powers are just fictional positioning – they justify you doing things in the fiction; if you’ve got the power to turn a tank into armor and a gun, and it’s on your Powers Profile, you can do it. The EIC will ask you what the armor looks like and what cool stuff you do with that giant gun you’ve got. But when you get a 6- on Defy Danger move when a villain comes at you, maybe that armor is going to shatter, or maybe you get hurt some other way (mechanically it doesn’t matter, but it should obviously stay true to your vision of the character, and represent the game world honestly).

I hope that answers your question!

TL;DR – You can if you want, it doesn’t really matter except in cases where you’re fighting another player character…and during those times, it’s probably best for it not to matter anyway!
