Okay this is probably going to sound stupid, but how do players get Advancement points?

Okay this is probably going to sound stupid, but how do players get Advancement points? Is it only through drive books? Or are there other ways? Do they get an advancement point for rolling a 6 or below? If its through just drive books, then how do drive books work, I am finding it hard to get my head round them, you have to choose one during character gen, also how can a player change a drive book? Can they change?

  1. If you look at any Drive Book, and any move within a Drive Book, you’ll see that they all have an “available to open when…” condition. You open a Drive Book or move when you meet that condition. At the same time, when you meet one of those conditions you also get an Advancement Point.

A typical game of WiP has the players start with only their Origin Book, and working towards opening a Drive Book. Players can choose to work towards any Drive Book they like, switch to another whenever they like, have multiple books open or working towards multiple ones as they like. Of course, it’s going to be a lot easier to only be working towards one, and to be working with the EIC to fulfill some of those Conditions because some of them will need EIC involvement (and really, the EIC should always know what the players are working towards, but can be forgiven if the player is constantly changing or working towards multiple books).

  2. Of course, a typical game also assumes the players have basically just started using their powers and are pretty fresh-faced. So if the game is about playing established heroes with some history (or it’s a con game) you might consider starting them out with a Drive Book as well.

  3. Very useful information and better stated than I think it was in the rule book.  The drive books and how they fed advancement threw me as well until I sifted through the g+ posts and found someone else talking about how it worked.

I could have missed something in the book, but a lot of this seemed to be more implied than stated.  Plus, for me at least, the character building instructions left me thinking that you get to pick a single drive as opposed to simply indicating which one out of them all that you are currently working toward opening.  Having it more clearly explained (like Kyle’s post above) would have helped me a lot.

Having said that, this is one of the only things I have issue with in what otherwise appears to be an excellent game that I am very much looking forward to running for my local gaming group.
