So I was writing up some MotW stats for some characters from different franchises (and am still tempted to do more) and came across a couple of issues that caused me to tweak things.
For example Mai Taniyama from Ghost Hunt experiences growing psychic abilities over the course of the show. For example, she is often able to see spirits even when normal people can’t. But, for the most part, her greater psychic abilities only come fully in effect while she is asleep and dreaming. During such times she can often see the spiritual terrain for miles, have conversations with spirits who often give her clues as to what is happening and can frequently catch glimpses of whatever the source of all the trouble is.
So when I changed her Playbook to Spooky, I marked one of dark side issues as Sleep. Her other related mostly to her nature as an impulsive teenager with new powers and confidence issues. (Mood Swings, Impulse Control) I considered giving her Big Whammy because of the Nine Cuts invocation the Shintoist taught her, but she’s not all that confident with it and decided that was a use magic effect instead of a move.
Then there was Celty as the Monstrous. I could have marked her as the Summoned, there is some hint that her missing head might possibly spark an apocalypse if I remember, but I wasn’t sure on the Apocalypse thing and it wasn’t major, also she is generally liked by most everyone she talks too, even after revealing she has no head, so the Freakish move felt inappropriate. So I went with Monstrous. Which brought the issue of her curse. She’s not particularly vulnerable to anything, she doesn’t need to feed on people. That left Pure Drive and Dark Master. Pure Drive was problematic because normally she’s the most mature and emotionally settled/normal character in her cast. But she does have an obsession with finding her head. I figured that might count as a Dark Master in that she is normal most of the time and then suddenly catches a rumor about her head’s location and drops everything to chase it down. Then I decided to skip the whole thing by having her sixth advance be freed from the curse.
There was also Kate Freelander working for Sanctuary whose primary mission is to defend sentients regardless of whether they are human or not. So for one of her Red Tape issues I put in “Soft Hearted Regulations”
I also did a couple of places where the five given stat blocks didn’t match where I was going for. So did things like switch the positions of a +1 and a +0.
Does anybody else find themselves doing stuff like that?
What are some tweaks you’ve tried?
Also, now that I think on it, Celty might work better as the Divine.
