It’s been a while now that I’ve been working the #NahualRPG (which is Powered by the Apocalypse) using a dice pool adaptation of the AW engine. But I keep asking myself if that would do. I’ve done some playtesting and it seems to hold, the thing is when writing moves and thinking about modifiers, I’m not sure I should stick to this approach. What do you think?

  1. What is the good/exciting/interesting/different thing you are hoping for from a dice pool versus 2d6?

    2d6 has several features I can think of, whether they are advantages or disadvantages depends on the game you are playing….

    * simple

    * recognizable to players who have played other PbtA games

    * range of bonuses is small: their effect is understandable but there is little granularity for a range of potential outcomes

    * a bit dull, just those two little d6’s

    Your dice pool system would have to improve or alter one of those things (or something I didn’t list in a way that makes your game more what you want it to be).

    An example would be with a Dice Pool system it is easier to represent the contribution of different bits of the fiction to what is happening in the roll.  This die comes from your stat, this from the advantage given by a friend, this from some relationship you have, etc.  If that is important to your game, it seems worth sticking with it.
