When you give someone a makeover, roll+Hot.

When you give someone a makeover, roll+Hot.

When you give someone a makeover, roll+Hot.

On a hit, gain a string on them. On a 10+ choose 2, on a 7-9 choose only 1 and they also gain a string on you.

– They take +1 ongoing to their Hot and -1 ongoing to a Stat of your choice until they change their style

– Ask them a question that they must answer truthfully

– Remove one of their condition and give them a different one

– Offer them XP if they do what you want

  1. Okay I got the joke that was filling my head out, serious time now. Is this intended as a Grown Up move? Because it seems incredibly positive when I think about most non-grown up moves.

Or perhaps I somehow missed the string gain and misread the options. Bah… I’m not fully sold on this but that might be that I’ve seen far too many tragic teenager makeovers gone wrong that I’m personally traumatized

  2. Yeah I edited the post because I initially missed the fact that you gained a string for doing the move so it initially looks like it was you make a roll and the other person gets all the benefit which goes into the self sacrifice column in my mind.

Obviously that’s not what is what going on. Also think seeming a few selfless looking option in the choice list also threw me.

Personally I think the +1 to hot option and/or the replace a condition should just be the standard effect of the make over and the options should be what you as a character gets out of the makeover (i.e. A string on them, an answer to a question, some other personal benefit). But the again that’s personal preference.

At another look, It’s the counter-play that is messed up. This is a move that requires the willing participation of another character (unless they are passed out at the time but then I don’t think the getting an answer out of them works) so the counter-play is even more vital. I think I would, as a player, have a hard time agreeing to let someone give me a make over since it seems like they get a standard benefit on me and I only get a benefit if THEY choose from a list of options the things that either benefit me or don’t benefit me (or they roll partial success).

  3. Thanks Bastian Dornauf

Chris Stone-Bush that is what I kind of think as well but when you give someone a Makeover, you get a string on them – there shouldn’t be a scene where that is not happening.

  4. My impulse with this move would be to try to get every other character gives someone a makeover for crazy +hot.

Could easily rule it away with counting as changing styles, though, and someone becoming superhot through tons of makeovers does seem in genre, so maybe it’s not an issue.

  5. Reading this again I feel it is too much of a good thing. On a 10 up, I get a String and two options which are really powerful: I can reduce one of their stats, give them a Condition of my choice, or offer them an XP to do what I want without spending a String. This is balanced somewhat by requiring a willing subject, though.

What if this was more like the Ghost’s Hungry Ghost move? A move where most of the benefit goes to the subject on a 7-9, encouraging people to come to you for makeover. Something that gives you the option of a taking a String, asking a question, or offering XP to do what you want on a 10 up. But gives the subject a boosted Hot or removes a Condition on a 7 up.

  6. Is this move meant to be part of a skin? Or is it a special event move? You could make it into a generic move that could use any stat and change it from makeover, to any form of “style tutelage” (Ice queen, tough guy, etc) As long as the one rolling has a stat 2 points higher than the target. Otherwise it would be an amazing move for a Queen to gather more subjects.

  7. Before there was Monsterhearts, or perhaps very early after, I had an urban fantasy game set at a high school. One PC had a lot of weird stuff in his background, but personality-wise, he was an army brat with a troubled relationship with his father. He could work jewelry and style hair and was in much, much demand for makeovers. I’m thinking his Hot was likely +2. (His Volatile likely -1, even though he was really strong, simply because this was a person who didn’t want to hurt anyone precisely because he was strong.)

    Makeovers!
